Weightlifting At The 2022 Commonwealth Games – Women's 71 Kg
The women's 71 kg weightlifting event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games took place at the National Exhibition Centre on 1 August 2022. The weightlifter from England won the gold, with a combined lift of 229 kg. National Exhibition Centre
The National Exhibition Centre (NEC) is an exhibition centre located in Marston Green, Solihull, West Midlands, England. It is near junction 6 of the M42 motorway, and is adjacent to Birmingham Airport and Birmingham International railway station. It was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1976. History The NEC was originally going to be built adjacent to the M1 motorway (junction 21) near Leicester but it was turned down by Leicestershire County Council with claims that "The big shows won't move away from London". The building was designed by Edward Mills. In November 1971, the Secretary of State for the Environment granted outline planning approval for the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham. Weightlifting At The Commonwealth Games
Weightlifting is one of the sports at the quadrennial Commonwealth Games competition. It has been a Commonwealth Games sport since 1950. It is a core sport and must be included in the sporting programme of each edition of the Games. A total of 17 events were contested at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, 8 for men 7 for women and two powerlifting events. The first women's events were introduced in 2002. Between 1990 and 2002 a medal was awarded for each of the snatch and clean and jerk phases and for the combined total, offering as many as 46 gold medals in 2002. Since 2006 medals have only been awarded based on the combined total of both of these phases, as is the case at the Olympics. From 2002 para powerlifting events were contested at the Commonwealth Games and the sports results counted under weightlifting in its first four iterations upto 2014 and from 2018, it was separated from Weightlifting sports category and is considered as a separate individual para-sport. Joy Ogbonne Eze (born 6 June 2004) is a Nigerian weightlifter. She is a two-time gold medalist at the African Games. She also won the gold medal in the women's 64kg event at the 2021 African Weightlifting Championships in Nairobi, Kenya. She represented Nigeria at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. Career She represented Nigeria at the 2019 African Games held in Rabat, Morocco and she won the gold medal in the women's 64kg event. She also won the gold medal in her event at the 2021 African Weightlifting Championships held in Nairobi, Kenya. She won the bronze medal in the clean & jerk event in the women's 71kg event at the 2021 World Weightlifting Championships held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. She finished in 6th place in this competition.
