Tommy Kono
Tamio "Tommy" Kono (June 27, 1930 – April 24, 2016) was a Japanese American weightlifter in the 1950s and 1960s. Kono set world records in four different weight classes: lightweight (149 pounds or 67.5 kilograms), middleweight (165 lb or 75 kg), light-heavyweight (182 lb or 82.5 kg) and middle-heavyweight (198 lb or 90 kg). Early life Kono was born in Sacramento, California, on June 27, 1930. His family was of Japanese descent and were interned at Tule Lake internment camp in 1942 during World War II following the signing of Executive Order 9066. Sickly as a child, the desert air helped Kono's asthma. It was during the relocation that Kono was introduced to weightlifting by neighbors including Noboru "Dave" Shimoda, a member of the Tule Lake weightlifting and bodybuilding club and brother of actor Yuki Shimoda and his friends, Gotoh, Toda and Bob Nakanishi. David Ashman
David Carlyle Ashman (October 13, 1932 – July 20, 1984) was an American male weightlifter, who competed in the heavyweight class and represented the United States at international competitions. He won the silver medal at the 1958 World Weightlifting Championships in the +90 kg category, losing to Russian Alexei Medvedev of the Soviet Union. Ashman, then 25, held a full-time job as an accountant in his hometown of Norwood, Massachusetts at the time. Ashman later moved to York, Pennsylvania to train with the York Barbell Club and shortly after that to California to join the Culver City Westside Barbell Club. Clyde Emrich (April 6, 1931 – November 10, 2021) was an American Olympic weightlifter. He was also a long-time strength coach for the Chicago Bears, who in 2008 named their weight room after him. He is a member of the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame. Early life and family Emrich was born in Chicago, Illinois. When he was a child, he enjoyed playing football and baseball. He began lifting weights at age 15 where he only weighed 110 pounds standing at 5 foot 6 inches tall. He had no coaching or training so he would turn to Strength and Health magazines for help on strength programs and how to lift.
