Joe May
Joe May (born Joseph Otto Mandl; 7 November 1880 – 29 April 1954) was an Austrian film director and film producer and one of the pioneers of German cinema. Biography After studying in Berlin and a variety of odd jobs, he began his career as a stage director of operettas in Hamburg. In 1902 he had married the actress Mia May (born Hermine Pfleger) and took his stage name from hers. Continental-Kunstfilm As Joe May, he made ten films for Continental-Kunstfilm GmbH in Berlin; the first, ''In der Tiefe des Schachtes (In the Depths of the Pit)'' was released in November 1912, followed by ''Vorglühen des Balkanbrandes (The Balkan Traitors)'' (starring Ernst Reicher). Ethel Hansa
Ethel Hansa (September 1884 or 1888 – after 1952), also billed as Ethel Parker-Hansa, was an American-born opera vocalist, a soprano, active in Germany during the 1910s and 1920s. Early life Ethel M. Parker was born in Philadelphia, the daughter of George L. Parker Sr. and Hattie M. Barber Parker. She studied voice with Mathilde Marchesi in Paris, with further studies in Vienna and Berlin. Career Hansa sang with the Berlin State Opera from 1914 to 1925. She was "one of the few American singers who elected to remain in Berlin during the troublous times of war", noted ''Musical America'' in 1915. Esther Carena (born Franziska Lucia Pfeiffer; 24 August 1898 – 26 January 1972) was a German actress. She appeared in more than 30 films between 1916 and 1924. Biography The daughter of a German father and Spanish mother, she studied medicine for one semester and trained in an Italian acrobat troupe. Until 1916 she lived mostly in Italy and performed there in stage sketches. In 1916 she came to Germany and was discovered by Swedish film actor and director Nils Olaf Chrisander.
