We The People Reform Movement
The We the People Reform Movement is a Belizean political party established in 2003. Leaders National Coordinator: Hipolito Bautista, Lucilo Teck Participation in local elections It was established sometime in early 2003 and contested its first general elections not long after. Its 11 candidates won no seats. In municipal elections for 2006, the WTP participated in Corozal Town, fielding seven candidates including one Mayoral candidate. The WTP finished third in the race but caused the election, won by the United Democratic Party, to be rather close. The WTP had announced that it would contest the next general elections, to be held in 2008 and recently joined the National Belizean Alliance, established in October 2007; however, they did not field any candidates. Corozal Town
Corozal Town is a town in Belize, capital of Corozal District. Corozal Town is located about 84 miles north of Belize City, and 9 miles from the border with Mexico. The population of Corozal Town, according to the main results of the 2010 census, is 9,871. Corozal was a private estate before becoming a town in the 1840s, mostly settled by Maya Mestizo refugees from the Caste War of Yucatán. Much of the town was built over an ancient Maya city, sometimes known as Santa Rita; this may have been the original Pre-Columbian town called Chactemal, which extended from present day Corozal to Chetumal, Mexico. Corozal Town was badly damaged by Hurricane Janet in 1955 and was substantially rebuilt afterward. United Democratic Party (Belize)
The United Democratic Party (UDP) is one of the two major political parties in Belize. It is currently the main opposition party, having lost the 2020 Belizean general election, after previously holding the government across three prior terms. Founded as a centre-right conservative party, the UDP is led by Shyne Barrow. Founding In 1973 political opposition in Belize was weak and the ruling People's United Party (PUP) had never lost a legislative election since its foundation. The main opposition parties, the National Independence Party and the People's Development Movement met together with a new Liberal Party to consider forming an alliance to fight the PUP. The resulting merger formed the United Democratic Party on 27 September 1973. The National Belizean Alliance was a group of third parties contesting the 2008 general elections in Belize. The Senate is one of the chambers of the National Assembly of Belize. It has 13 members appointed for a five-year term by the Governor General of Belize. The House of Representatives of Belize is one of two chambers of the National Assembly, the other being the Senate. It was created under the 1981 constitution. Members are commonly called "Area Representatives." Area Representatives are elected by winning a majority of votes in their respective constituencies under the first-past-the-post system. The body is directly descended from the British Honduras Legislative Assembly created in 1954 with nine elected members. It has been expanded several times since: to 18 in 1961, 28 in 1984, 29 in 1993 and finally to 31 in 2008. This article lists political parties in the country of Belize. Belize has a two-party system, which means that there are two dominant political parties. It is difficult to achieve electoral success under the banner of any other party. Political culture In 1950, after the general worker union had been formed, the people's committee constituted itself as the PUP (People's United Party) and taken the majority seating in the elected Belize city council. When Belize became fully independent and joined in the Commonwealth on September 21, 1981, the two parties UDP (United Democratic Party) and PUP rose in the political scene.
