Way Down South (film)
''Way Down South'' is a 1939 American musical film directed by Leslie Goodwins and Bernard Vorhaus, and produced by Sol Lesser. It was written by Clarence Muse, who also acted in the film, and Langston Hughes. Victor Young was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Music, Scoring. Plot In antebellum Louisiana in 1854, young orphan Timothy Reid Jr. inherits a plantation and its slaves. However, lawyer Martin Dill is made the executor of the estate. Dill plots to sell the slaves and flee to Paris with the proceeds. Timothy is befriended by Jacques Bouton, who persuades Judge Louis Ravenal to look into the matter and save the day. ''Way Down South'' is the debut solo album by Matt "Guitar" Murphy, released in 1990 via Discovery Records. It includes contributions by his brother Floyd. Critical reception The ''Toronto Star'' called the album "a languid, liquid masterpiece". The record is listed as an "Album Pick" on AllMusic. Reviewing for the site, Bill Dahl commented that the guitarist "acquits himself most competently here, mixing blues, funk, R&B, and a little jazz into his sparkling fretwork. His brother Floyd Murphy, a Memphis blues guitar legend himself, is on hand for a family reunion." ''The Delta Sweete'' is the second studio album by American singer-songwriter Bobbie Gentry. It was released on February 5, 1968, by Capitol Records. The album was produced by Kelly Gordon. Background One week after "Ode to Billie Joe" concluded its four-week reign at the top of the '' Billboard'' Hot 100, Gentry returned home to the South. September 30, 1967 was declared "Bobbie Gentry Day" in Houston, Mississippi, which is the county seat of Chickasaw County. It was estimated that 5,000 people attended. ''Life'' magazine turned up to interview Gentry for a feature story that would appear in the November issue accompanied by a photograph of Gentry on the Tallahatchie Bridge. Gentry returned to California the following month to begin work on her second album.
