Washington's 35th Legislative District
Washington's 35th legislative district is one of forty-nine districts in Washington state for representation in the state legislature. It covers all of Mason County, and parts of Thurston and Kitsap counties. The district's legislators are state senator Drew MacEwen (R) and state representatives Dan Griffey (R; position 1) and Travis Couture (R; position 2). The previous Senator, Tim Sheldon stated in March 2022 that he did not intend to run for reelection in the next cycle. MacEwen, who previously served as Representative in Position 2, ran for and was elected in November 2022 to replace Sheldon in the Senate. The Washington State Legislature is the state legislature of the U.S. state of Washington. It is a bicameral body, composed of the lower Washington House of Representatives, composed of 98 Representatives, and the upper Washington State Senate, with 49 Senators plus the Lieutenant Governor acting as president. Mason County is a county located in the U.S. state of Washington. As of the 2020 census, the population was 65,726. The county seat and only incorporated city is Shelton. The county was formed out of Thurston County on March 13, 1854. Originally named Sawamish County, it took its present name in 1864 in honor of Charles H. Kitsap County
Kitsap County is located in the U.S. state of Washington. As of the 2020 census, its population was 275,611. Its county seat is Port Orchard, and its largest city is Bremerton. Tim Sheldon
Timothy Markham Sheldon (born March 9, 1947) is an American farmer, businessman, and politician serving as a member of the Washington State Senate, representing the 35th District since 1997. The district includes all of Mason County and parts of Thurston and Kitsap counties. A member of the Democratic Party, Sheldon has been caucusing with the Republican-dominated Majority Coalition Caucus and afterwards the Republican Caucus since 2012. The Washington Redistricting Commission is a decennial body charged with redrawing congressional and legislative districts in the state of Washington after each census. On November 8, 1983, Washington state passed the 74th amendment to its constitution via Senate Joint Resolution 103 to permanently establish the Redistricting Commission. Earlier that year the first commission redrew the state's congressional map after the previous one drawn by the legislature was ruled unconstitutional.
