Washington's 22nd legislative district is one of forty-nine districts in Washington state for representation in the state legislature. The district includes the state capital Olympia and areas surrounding it, such as Lacey and Tumwater. The district's legislators are state senator Sam Hunt and state representatives Beth Doglio (position 1) and Jessica Bateman (position 2), all Democrats. It is a bicameral body, composed of the lower Washington House of Representatives, composed of 98 Representatives, and the upper Washington State Senate, with 49 Senators plus the Lieutenant Governor acting as president. Olympia, Washington
Olympia is the capital of the U.S. state of Washington and the county seat and largest city of Thurston County. It is southwest of the state's most populous city, Seattle, and is a cultural center of the southern Puget Sound region. European settlers claimed the area in 1846, with the Treaty of Medicine Creek initiated in 1854, followed by the Treaty of Olympia in 1856. Lacey, Washington
Lacey is a city in Thurston County, Washington, United States. It is a suburb of Olympia with a population of 53,526 at the 2020 census. Lacey is located along Interstate 5 between Olympia and the Nisqually River, which marks the border with Pierce County and Joint Base Lewis–McChord. History Lacey was originally called Woodland after settlers Isaac and Catherine Wood, who claimed land there in 1853. By 1891, the railroad had come to the community of Woodland and the residents decided it was time to apply for a post office. The request was denied because there was already a town called Woodland on the Columbia River. The name Lacey was chosen for the new post office application, presumably after O. C. Tumwater, Washington
Tumwater is a town in Thurston County, Washington, United States. The population was 25,350 at the 2020 census. It is situated near where the Deschutes River enters Budd Inlet, the southernmost point of Puget Sound; it also borders the state capital of Olympia to the north. Tumwater is the oldest permanent Anglo-American settlement on Puget Sound. History The site of Tumwater and Tumwater Falls has been home to Southern Lushootseed-speaking peoples known as the Steh-Chass / Stehchass or Statca'sabsh (a subtribe of the Sahewamish (Sahe'wabsh), an subgroup of the Nisqually people; who became part of the post-treaty Squaxin Island Tribe) for thousands of years. Sam Hunt (Washington Politician)
Samuel William Hunt (born December 9, 1942) is an American politician and educator serving as a member of the Washington State Senate from the 22nd district. Early life and education Hunt was born in Billings, Montana. After receiving a degree and teaching certificate from Washington State University, Hunt took post-graduate studies at Washington State University and the University of Oregon. Career He was a public school teacher in Pasco and Montesano, and Governor Booth Gardner's Special Assistant for K-12 Education. Hunt served as a member of the Washington House of Representatives from 2001 to 2017, and was succeeded by Beth Doglio. He was then elected to the Washington State Senate. Beth Maureen Doglio (born 1965) is an American politician and activist who serves as a member of the Washington House of Representatives for Washington's 22nd legislative district. She originally served an initial term between 2017 and 2021, retiring to run for in the 2020 United States House of Representatives elections in Washington, 2020 elections; she placed second in the primary and lost to fellow Democrat Marilyn Strickland in the general election. Elected in 2020, she assumed office on January 11, 2021, succeeding Beth Doglio. Washington Redistricting Commission
The Washington Redistricting Commission is a decennial body charged with redrawing congressional and legislative districts in the state of Washington after each census. On November 8, 1983, Washington state passed the 74th amendment to its constitution via Senate Joint Resolution 103 to permanently establish the Redistricting Commission. Earlier that year the first commission redrew the state's congressional map after the previous one drawn by the legislature was ruled unconstitutional. Since after the 1990 census, a committee of four appointees of the majority and minority leaders of the House and Senate appoint a fifth member as non-voting chair, and meet to redistributes representative seats according to census results. The Washington State Senate is the upper house of the Washington State Legislature. The body consists of 49 members, each representing a district with a population of nearly 160,000.
