Washington's 11th legislative district is one of forty-nine districts in Washington state for representation in the state legislature. The district includes southern Seattle, Renton, Tukwila, and a portion of Kent. The district's legislators are state senator Bob Hasegawa and state representatives David Hackney (position 1) and Steve Bergquist (position 2), all Democrats. The Washington State Legislature is the state legislature of the U.S. state of Washington. It is a bicameral body, composed of the lower Washington House of Representatives, composed of 98 Representatives, and the upper Washington State Senate, with 49 Senators plus the Lieutenant Governor acting as president. The state is divided into 49 legislative districts, each of which elect one senator and two representatives. Renton is a city in King County, Washington, and an inner-ring suburb of Seattle. Situated southeast of downtown Seattle, Renton straddles the southeast shore of Lake Washington, at the mouth of the Cedar River. As of the 2020 census, the population of Renton was 106,785, up from 90,927 at the 2010 census. Tukwila ( ) is a suburban city in King County, Washington, United States, located immediately to the south of Seattle. The population was 21,798 at the 2020 census. Tukwila is a community of communities, with residents of many diverse origins living in the city. A large commercial center draws workers and consumers to the city daily; industry thrives with the confluence of rivers, freeways, railroads, and Seattle–Tacoma International Airport. Bob Hasegawa
Robert Alan Hasegawa (born September 22, 1952) is an American labor leader and politician serving as a member of the Washington State Senate, representing the 11th Legislative District since January 2013. Hasegawa is a lifelong resident of Seattle's Beacon Hill. He previously served in the Washington State House of Representatives, and is retired from the Teamsters Union where he was a member and union leader for over 32 years. Early life and education Bob Hasegawa grew up in Seattle, and lives in the Beacon Hill residence he grew up in. The son of Japanese immigrants, his parents, aunts, uncles, and grandparents were interned by the Federal government of the United States during the World War II. David Hackney
George David Hackney (born December 15, 1965) is an American attorney and politician who is a member of the Washington House of Representatives from the 11th district. Elected in 2020, he assumed office on January 11, 2021. Early life and education Hackney was born in Cleveland, Ohio and lived in five states as a child. Hackney earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Cornell University and Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School. He was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon and played football his freshman year. Career After graduating from law school, Hackney worked as an attorney and activist. Hackney served as a prosecutor for the United States Department of Justice in California and taught trial advocacy through the United Nations. Washington Redistricting Commission
The Washington Redistricting Commission is a decennial body charged with redrawing congressional and legislative districts in the state of Washington after each census. On November 8, 1983, Washington state passed the 74th amendment to its constitution via Senate Joint Resolution 103 to permanently establish the Redistricting Commission. Earlier that year the first commission redrew the state's congressional map after the previous one drawn by the legislature was ruled unconstitutional. Since after the 1990 census, a committee of four appointees of the majority and minority leaders of the House and Senate appoint a fifth member as non-voting chair, and meet to redistributes representative seats according to census results.
