Ward Hotel
The Ward Hotel, at 925 Main Street in Thompson Falls in Sanders County, Montana was built in 1907-1908 by Edward Donlan. Edward Donlan is very likely the most significant individual in Thompson Falls history. He was a substantial land owner, entrepreneur and politician. He was elected state senator from Missoula in 1902, 1906, 1910 and 1918. Construction for the Ward Hotel began in September, 1907 and was completed in May, 1908. The original design called for 30 sleeping rooms, an office, a bar, a restaurant, and a full basement for a power plant and laundry room. The property changed hands many times. The name changed from the Ward Hotel to the Thompson in the 1920s, to the Black Bear Hotel in the 1930s, to the Townhouse Hotel in the 1970s and then back to the Black Bear. Thompson Falls, Montana
Thompson Falls is a city in and the county seat of Sanders County, Montana. The population was 1,336 at the time of the 2020 census. History Thompson Falls was named after British explorer, geographer and fur trader David Thompson, who founded a North West Company fur trading post called Saleesh House in 1809. The community is located next to natural waterfalls on the Clark Fork river. The settlement of the Oregon Boundary Dispute in 1846, ended joint occupancy with Britain and established the border with British North America and made the region firmly American. The arrival of the railroad in 1881 brought the first real activity to the area. Two years later, when the gold rush hit nearby Cœur d'Alene, the town grew to accommodate the men going over the Murray Trail to the mines. In 1885 John Russell bought and plotted the town site. Sanders County is a county in the U.S. state of Montana. As of the 2020 census, the population was 12,400. Its county seat is Thompson Falls. The county was founded in 1905. It has an annual county fair with rodeo at Plains. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of , of which is land and (1.1%) is water. Sanders County lies on the state's western border; thus it shares the border with Idaho to the west. It is part of the Coeur d'Alene Mountains in the Bitterroot Range. The Clark Fork River flows southeast to northwest through the middle of the county, with the Bitterroot Mountains to the south and the Cabinet Mountains to the north.
