War Widows Association, New Delhi
War Widows Association (WWA) is a registered non-governmental civilian organisation based in New Delhi for the support of women who have lost their husbands to war. The Association has reached out to and supported the widows of the 1965 Indo-Pakistani War, the 1971 Indo-Pak war, the Kargil War in 1999 as well as the widows of the CRPF men killed in Pulwama attack in 2019. Description WWA was formed by women who were affected by the trauma of the 1965 Indo-Pakistani War to provide support to wives who had lost their husbands in the 1971 Indo-Pak war; this was the impetus for the formation of the War Widows Association in 1972 with its chairperson as V.Mohini Giri. The group found out that the main concerns of the widows after losing their husbands were "shelter, jobs and dignity". The widows also struggled with supporting their children. Army Wives Welfare Association
Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA) is an Indian non-profit organisation that works for the spouse, children or any dependents of Army personnel. The association was founded in 1966 and aims to rehabilitate war widows and battle casualties. Other than that, the association organises vocational training and empowers the beneficiaries. The former president of the AWWA, Madhulika Rawat, was also the president of the Defence Wives Welfare Association (DWWA) until 8 December 2021. Mrs Archana Pande, wife of General Manoj Pande is currently serving as President of AWWA. A widow (female) or widower (male) is a person whose spouse has died. Terminology The state of having lost one's spouse to death is termed ''widowhood''. An archaic term for a widow is "relict," literally "someone left over". This word can sometimes be found on older gravestones. The word "widow" comes from an Indo-European root meaning "widow" and has cognates across Indo-European languages. The male form, "widower", is first attested in the 14th century, by the 19th century supplanting "widow" with reference to men. War Widows’ Association of Great Britain is an advocacy group for widows and widowers of British military personnel killed in action or from injuries attributable to their Service. It was founded in 1971 to persuade the British government to make the widows' pension tax-free, a goal which it finally obtained in 1979. The Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 or the Second Kashmir War was a culmination of skirmishes that took place between April 1965 and September 1965 between Pakistan and India. The conflict began following Pakistan's Operation Gibraltar, which was designed to infiltrate forces into Jammu and Kashmir to precipitate an insurgency against Indian rule, It became the immediate cause of the war.
