Lincoln House, owned by billionaire Cyrus Poonawalla, is a 50,000 sq foot heritage property located at 78, Bhulabhai Desai Road, in the billionaires row of Mumbai, India. Property history A Grade-III listed mansion designed 1933 by British architect Claude Batley, the property was originally built for the Maharaja of Wankaner, HH Sir Amarsinhji Banesinhji and his son Pratapsinhji Jhala. From 1957 the property was leased to the U.S. Government and served as the Consulate General of the United States in Mumbai. Cyrus S. Poonawalla (born in 1941) is an Indian billionaire businessman, and the chairman and managing director of the Cyrus Poonawalla Group, which includes the Serum Institute of India, an Indian biotech company which is the largest vaccine manufacturer in the world and Poonawalla Fincorp a leading NBFC in India. In 2022, he is ranked number 4 on Forbes India rich list with a net worth of $24.3 billion. He is ranked number 1 in Hurun Global health care rich list 2022. Career Poonawalla founded the Serum Institute of India in 1966 and built it to the largest vaccine manufacturer (by doses) in the world. Claude Batley F.R.I.B.A., F.I.A.A., (17 October 1879 in Ipswich – 20 March 1956, Bombay) was an English architect who as practitioner, teacher and President of the Indian Institute of Architects from 1921 to 1923, played an influential role in development of modern architecture in India in the first half of the 20th century. Career Born in Ipswich in 1879 and educated at Ipswich School, Batley served his articles locally and in London leaving for India in 1913. In Bombay he started a successful independent architectural practice in 1917 with partners Gregson and King, a firm of architects which is still extant under the name of Gregson, Batley and King. Wankaner State
Wankaner State was one of the princely states of India in the historical Halar region of Kathiawar during the period of the British Raj. It was an eleven gun salute state belonging to the Kathiawar Agency of the Bombay Presidency. Its capital was in Wankaner, located in Rajkot district, Gujarat state. Most of the territory of the state was mountainous. History Wankaner State was founded in 1620 by Raj Sartanji, son of Prathirajji, eldest son of maharana Raj Chandrasinghji of a rajput ruler of Halvad (1584–1628). In 1807 Wankaner State became a British protectorate when Maharana Raj Sahib Chandrasinhji II Kesarisinhji signed a treaty with the British. In 1862 the ruler of the state received a sanad giving the monarch authorization to adopt an heir. The ruler acceded to the Indian Union on 15 February 1948. Amarsinhji Banesinhji
Captain H.H. Maharana Raj Shri Sir Amarsinhji Banesinhji Sahib (4 January 1879 – 25 June 1954) was the last Maharana Raj Sahib of Wankaner belonging to Jhala dynasty, who ascended the throne of princely state of Wankaner on 12 June 1881 and ruled until his state was merged into India on 15 February 1948. He continued to be officially Maharana Sahib of Wankaner till his death on 28 June 1954. He was installed on the throne upon the death of his father Maharana Banesinhji Jaswantsinhji on 25 June 1881 at age of two years, and the State was placed under administration of government. He joined Rajkumar College, Rajkot for education. After his education was complete, he was given rein of State on 18 March 1889.
