Walthamstow School for Girls is single sex girls' secondary school situated in Walthamstow, London. It currently educates 900 girls between the ages of 11–16.. Locally, the school is known as 'Green School'. It is close to Walthamstow Central and the Prime Meridian. History It opened in 1890 as a private school on ''West Avenue'', then moved to ''Church Hill''. The school was refurbished in 2009. It occupies three main buildings, which have areas dedicated to subjects taught in the school. The school saw a new head teacher take over in September 2012. Ada Maddocks
Ada Maddocks (22 September 1927–7 March 2007) was a British trade union official. Born in Felixstowe, Maddocks grew up in Walthamstow and was educated at Walthamstow High School before working in a laboratory for the Co-operative Wholesale Society. She became active in the co-operative movement, then began working for the National and Local Government Officers Association in 1961. In 1976, she assumed lead responsibility for health service employees in the union, and was elected to one of two women-only seats on the General Council of the Trades Union Congress. She was awarded an OBE in 1982, and served as President of the Trades Union Congress in 1990, actively supporting the ambulance workers' strike. Frances Margaret Horovitz ( Hooker; 13 February 1938 – 2 October 1983) was an English poet and broadcaster. Life and work Frances Margaret Hooker (who adopted and wrote under the surname of her first husband, Michael Horovitz) was born in Walthamstow, London, in 1938 but moved with her family to Nottingham in 1942 when her father was appointed manager of a munitions factory there. In 1947 they returned to London and Frances attended Walthamstow School for Girls. She went on to Bristol University to study English and Drama and then to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. As a reader and presenter for the BBC, she acquired a reputation for care of preparation and quality of delivery.
