Walter Devereux (born 1173)
Walter Devereux was an Anglo-Norman nobleman living during the reign of king Henry II of England and Richard I of England. The Devereux, along with the Baskervilles and Pichards, were prominent knightly families along the Welsh marches during the twelfth century, and linked to William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke, and the Braose and Lacy lordships of the region. Ceredigion (also Cardiganshire) is a parliamentary constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament. Created in 1536, the franchise expanded in the late 19th century and on the enfranchisement of women. Its boundaries remained virtually unchanged until 1983. From 1536 until 1885 the area had two seats (electing MPs): a county constituency (Cardiganshire) comprising the rural areas, the other the borough constituency known as the Cardigan District of Boroughs comprising a few separate towns; in 1885 the latter was abolished, its towns and electors incorporated into the former, reduced to one MP. The towns which comprised the Boroughs varied slightly over this long period, but primarily consisted of Cardigan, Aberystwyth, Lampeter and Adpar, the latter now a suburb of Newcastle Emlyn across the Teifi, in Carmarthenshire. Walter Devereux (died 1683)
Walter Devereux (c. 1621 – December 1683) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1660 to 1679. Devereux was the son of Walter Devereux, 5th Viscount Hereford and his second wife Elizabeth Knightley, the daughter of Thomas Knightley of Burgh Hall, Staffordshire. He married Anne, the daughter of William of Butley Priory, near Orford, Suffolk, at which the couple subsequently lived. He was commissioner for sewers for Norfolk and Suffolk in 1658 and 1659 and became a freeman of Orford in 1660. In 1660, Devereux was elected Member of Parliament for Orford in the Convention Parliament. He became a Justice of the Peace for Suffolk in July 1660. He was re-elected MP for Orford in 1661 for the Cavalier Parliament and sat until 1679. He was relatively inactive during his time in parliament. Sir Walter Devereux, 5th Viscount Hereford, 2nd Baronet of Castle Bromwich (c. 1575 – 1656), was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times, between 1614 and 1624, before succeeding to the family Viscountcy in the peerage of England. Life The son of Sir Edward Devereux, of Castle Bromwich, Warwickshire, and his wife Catherine née Arden, he was grandson of Sir Walter Devereux, ''cr.'' Viscount Hereford in 1550. He succeeded his father in 1622 as 2nd baronet, later inheriting in 1646 the title of his first cousin twice removed as Viscount Hereford. Devereux previously served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Stafford in 1614, before being elected in 1621 as MP for Marlborough, and in 1624 as MP for Worcestershire then in 1625 MP for Worcester. He also served as High Sheriff of Worcestershire in 1625. Walter Devereux, 1st Earl of Essex, KG (16 September 1541 – 22 September 1576), was an English nobleman and general. From 1573 until his death he fought in Ireland in connection with the Plantations of Ireland, most notably the Rathlin Island massacre. He was the father of Robert, 2nd Earl of Essex, who was Elizabeth I's favourite during her later years. Walter Devereux, 10th Baron Ferrers of Chartley, created 1st Viscount Hereford, KG (1488 – 17 September 1558) was an English courtier and parliamentarian. Baron Ferrers Walter was the son and heir of John Devereux, 9th Baron Ferrers and Cecily Bourchier.; In May 1501, his father died and Sir Walter succeeded him as the 10th Baron Ferrers, and succeeded to his father's lands in 1509. He was appointed High Steward of Tamworth in 1510, and joint Constable of Warwick Castle along with Sir Edward Belknap in 1511. He was also Joint Steward of the manor, or borough of Warwick. In 1513, he was appointed Keeper of Netherwood Park and Councillor and Royal Commissioner of Wales and the Marches, and High Steward of Hereford the following year. Walter Devereux of Bodenham and Bromwich was an Anglo-Norman knight and sheriff of Herefordshire living during the reigns of Henry III of England and Edward I of England. The Devereux were a prominent family along the Welsh Marches during the thirteenth century, and integral to the control of this region during the Second Barons' War.
