Talking animals are a common element in mythology and folk tales, children's literature, and modern comic books and animated cartoons. Fictional talking animals often are anthropomorphic, possessing human-like qualities (such as bipedal walking, wearing clothes, and living in houses). ''Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse'' (also ''The Floyd Gottfredson Library'') is a 2011–2018 series of books collecting the span of work by Floyd Gottfredson on the daily ''Mickey Mouse'' comic strip in twelve volumes, as well as Gottfredson's Sunday strips of the same title over two separate volumes. The strips are reproduced from Disney proof sheets and artwork from private collections. Background The strip debuted on January 13, 1930, and was initially written by Walt Disney and drawn first by Ub Iwerks, then by Win Smith. Gottfredson took over the strip when Disney and Smith found themselves too busy, and he continued with it until 1975. These volumes start with Gottfredson's work from April 1, 1930, while including the earlier non-Gottfredson strips in an appendix to the first volume. Farmyard Symphony (film)
''Farmyard Symphony'' is a 1938 ''Silly Symphonies'' animated short film. It can be seen as a precursor to ''Fantasia'' due to using various pieces of classical music in one short. The film was directed by Jack Cutting and produced by Walt Disney. An adaptation of the short was featured in the ''Silly Symphony'' comic strip over six weeks, from October 23 to November 27, 1938, around the time of the film's theatrical release. While the short doesn't have much of a story, the comic adaptation expands on a running gag involving a piglet looking for food, giving one of the piglets distinctive markings and a name (Spotty), and turns the gag into a short narrative. Spotty Pig also appeared in a nine-page story in the ''Silly Symphonies'' comic book issue #2 (1953). Plot Set to various classical pieces, the animals of a farmyard go about their daily business. ''Three Orphan Kittens'' is a 1935 animation, animated short film in the ''Silly Symphonies'' series produced by Walt Disney Productions. It was the winner of the 1935 Academy Awards, Oscar for Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film, Academy Award for Best Short Subject (Cartoons). It was followed in 1936 by a sequel, ''More Kittens''. Plot The film tells the story of three kittens, one black, one orange and one grey, and their adventures in a house. It begins with the kittens left out in the snow. They then notice the house nearby and enter it for shelter. They arrive at its kitchen, and begin to play there after the house's African-American housekeeper has finished preparing a meal. After more playing in various areas of the house, the film switches its focus to one particular kitten, the black one, who is chasing a feather and eventually ends up on a Player piano, pianola keyboard.
