Waddon () is a neighbourhood in the London Borough of Croydon, at the western end of the town of Croydon. The area borders the London Borough of Sutton. History It is not known when the manor of Croydon was granted to the See of Canterbury, but it is thought of be before then end of the 9th century. The archbishop had lands in Croydon about 871. The Domesday Book shows it as part of the archbishop's lands held in demesne (for his own use). After a royal grant in the 13th century, Croydon became a market town. In 1276 Archbishop Robert Kilwardby obtained a grant of market in 1276. It was to be held every Friday and a nine-day fair was to be held on the vigil of St. Botolph the abbot (17 June). Waddon's name was first recorded in the twelfth century and derives from Old English meaning 'the hill where woad grows, or is grown'. John Waddon (Parliamentarian)
John Waddon (born January 1591) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons of England from 1640 to 1648. He supported the Parliamentarian side in the English Civil War. Waddon was the son of John Waddon of Plymouth and his wife Alice. He was at Exeter College, Oxford and was awarded BA in 1609 and MA in 1612. In 1631 he was Mayor of Plymouth. In April 1640, Waddon was elected Member of Parliament for Plymouth for the Short Parliament. He was re-elected in November 1640 for the Long Parliament and sat until 1648 when he was excluded under Pride's Purge Pride's Purge is the name commonly given to an event that took place on 6 December 1648, when soldiers prevented members of Parliament considered hostile to the New Model Army from entering the House of Commons of England. John Waddon (c. 1649 – 25 August 1695) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons of England in from 1689 to 1690. Waddon was the son of Thomas Waddon of Plymouth and his wife Honor Ley, daughter of John Ley or Kempthorne of Tonacombe and was baptised on 18 January 1649. His grandfather John Waddon was MP for Plymouth during the English Civil War. He was at Exeter College, Oxford. He was Vice-Warden of the Stannaries and Deputy Lieutenant for Cornwall and governor of Pendennis Castle Waddon lived at Moditonham House where in 1689 John Granville, 1st Earl of Bath held a meeting with the representatives of the Prince of Orange concerning the surrender of Pendennis and Plymouth Castles. Rik Waddon (born 27 February 1977) is a Professional Paralympic British road and track racing cyclist and Paralympian. Waddon is a brain injury survivor, after being involved in a bicycle accident at the age of five. This resulted in physical disabilities, memory loss and recurring fatigue.
