WVOK-FM
WVOK-FM (97.9 FM, "97.9 WVOK") is a radio station broadcasting a hot adult contemporary music format. Licensed to Oxford, Alabama, it serves the Anniston-Oxford Metropolitan Area. It is owned and operated by Woodard Broadcasting Company, Inc. Early history In 1977, WVOK-FM was launched in Birmingham, Alabama as an Album-Oriented Rock radio station called "K-99." The station broadcast from the 99.5 MHz frequency; it was originally a counterpart to WVOK-AM 69 one of the more popular Top 40 stations of its era. WVOK-FM changed its call letters to WRKK in 1979; it kept its Rock format until 1983, when it became "K Country." Several format changes later, the station is now known in Birmingham as WZRR "Talk 99.5." The WVOK call letters would not be heard on the FM dial again until the creation of a new radio station in Oxford, Alabama. WZRR (99.5 FM, "Talk 99.5") is a radio station licensed to Birmingham, Alabama. It carries a talk radio format, simulcast with AM sister station WAPI. WZRR is one of several Birmingham-area radio stations owned by Cumulus Media, with radio studios and offices on Goodwin Crest Drive in Homewood. WZRR and WAPI carry local talk shows during the day, but at night they run nationally syndicated shows from the co-owned Westwood One Network including Mark Levin, Ben Shapiro, Dan Bongino, ''Red Eye Radio'' and '' First Light.'' Licensed to Oxford, Alabama, United States, the station serves the Anniston–Oxford metropolitan area. The station is currently owned by Woodard Broadcasting Company, Inc. History In Talladega: WJHB, WEYY The Confederate Broadcasting Company, owned by W. K. Johnson, James Hemphill and Ned Butler, put WJHB on the air from Talladega, Alabama on April 15, 1956. Talladega's second radio station operated during the daytime only with 1,000 watts. The Tallabama Broadcasting Company, which owned WGSV in Guntersville and WGAD in Gadsden, acquired WJHB in 1961, with the sale closing in 1962. Oxford, Alabama
Oxford is a city in Calhoun, Talladega, and Cleburne counties in the State of Alabama. The population was 22,069 at the 2020 census,. Oxford is one of two principal cities of and included in the Anniston-Oxford Metropolitan Statistical Area, and it is the largest city in Calhoun County by population. History Founded in the early 1850s, Oxford was the first city in Calhoun County to be incorporated, in 1852. The name "Oxford" was due to the presence of a narrow crossing of Chocolocco Creek that allowed farmers to ford cattle from one side of the creek to the other. WJOX (AM)
WJOX (690 kHz, "Jox 3") is a commercial AM radio station licensed to Birmingham, Alabama. It is owned by Cumulus Media and broadcasts a sports radio format. WJOX is the Birmingham affiliate of the UAB Blazers Radio Network (baseball only), the Tennessee Titans Radio Network and the Atlanta Braves Radio Network. It used to be the broadcast home of the Birmingham Barons. The station has studios and offices in Homewood. By day, WJOX broadcasts at 50,000 watts, the maximum for commercial AM stations. But because AM 690 is a Canadian and Mexican clear channel frequency, WJOX must significantly drop its power at sunset to 500 watts to avoid interference. It also uses a directional antenna at night. ''The Rick and Bubba Show'' is an American comedy radio show based in Birmingham, Alabama. Nationally syndicated and produced at WZZK-FM, the show is live every weekday for five hours and is hosted by Rick Burgess and Bill "Bubba" Bussey. The Rick and Bubba Radio Show The radio program began on January 8, 1994.
