WMBL (AM)
WMBL (740 AM broadcasting, AM) was a radio station in Morehead City, North Carolina. Its call letters stood for Where Morehead Beaufort Link. The station went on the air in 1947. The entry for WMBL in a booklet from August 1957 to commemorate Morehead City's centennial states: the "radio station is heard from Maine to Florida, and has been heard all the way to Nebraska. Particularly, this is true during hurricane season, when friends and relatives at distant points want information on conditions in this locale." WMBL was one of the few stations to play beach music in the 1950s and 1960s. A listener of the station noted that an afternoon deejay of that time, Bobbie Dennis, "was bold enough to play records by The Drifters, Clyde McPhatter and Big Joe Turner, to name a few." WLTQ (730 AM broadcasting, AM) is a radio station licensed to Charleston, South Carolina, United States. The format is Catholic Church, Catholic Talk radio, talk, with some programming shared with nearby WWOS (AM), WWOS. 730 AM is a Canadian and Mexican clear-channel frequency. History WPAL was Charleston's first radio station targeting African-Americans. William Saunders bought the station in 1985 after being a part owner since 1971, and he added WAYA-FM, WPAL-FM in 1994. In 1998, he sold WPAL to Clear Channel Communications, Clear Channel. Clear Channel changed the station call sign to WSCC (though the station was known as WSC) and its format to news/talk in 1999. The station moved from 18th to 16th. By 2002, WSC was beating WTMA with 25-54 listeners in the early afternoon with Rush Limbaugh, who WSC took from WTMA. Joseph Vernon "Big Joe" Turner Jr. (May 18, 1911 – November 24, 1985) was an American singer from Kansas City, Missouri. According to songwriter Doc Pomus, "Rock and roll would have never happened without him." His greatest fame was due to his rock-and-roll recordings in the 1950s, particularly "Shake, Rattle and Roll", but his career as a performer endured from the 1920s into the 1980s.
