WLUI (670 kHz AM) is an oldies radio station broadcasting in Lewistown, Pennsylvania and serving State College, Pennsylvania. It also can be heard in northern parts of Maryland and parts of southern New York state, as well as parts of eastern Pennsylvania. The daytime-only station previously operated a news/talk format featuring Joy Browne, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, and Sean Hannity. History Originally WMRF, the station signed on in June, 1941 with 250 Watts on 1490 kHz. The Call Letters stood for the initials of the last name of the ownership at the time. Just after World War II, Lewistown Broadcasting Company expanded, applying for an FM in Lewistown and an AM and eventually an FM in Altoona, Pa. In Lewistown, the FM station was granted and constructed as WLTN-FM on 97.9. Lewistown, Pennsylvania
Lewistown is a borough in and the county seat of Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is the principal city of the '' Lewistown, PA Micropolitan Statistical Area'', which encompasses all of Mifflin County. It lies along the Juniata River, northwest of Harrisburg. The number of people living in the borough in 1900 was 4,451; in 1910, 8,166; in 1940, 13,017; and in 2000, 8,998. The population was 8,561 at the 2020 census. Of the four communities in the United States named "Lewistown", this borough is the largest. WIBF is a country music formatted radio station licensed to Mexico, Pennsylvania serving the Lewistown, Pennsylvania, market. The station is owned by Kristin Cantrell, through licensee Southern Belle, LLC. WIBF is a member of the Motor Racing Network and provides live coverage of all NASCAR races. WIBF also features locally produced racing programs with news and results from Central Pennsylvania Sprint car racing. On September 1, 2015, WJUN-FM changed their call letters to WIBF and rebranded as "Bigfoot Country". It is part of a simulcast with WDBF of Mount Union. Joy Browne (born Joy Oppenheim; October 24, 1944—August 27, 2016), also known as Dr. Joy, was an American talk show host, specializing in advice counselling. She hosted a nationally syndicated call-in talk show for several decades, heard on numerous radio stations in the U.S. and Canada. Early life Browne was born Joy Oppenheim in New Orleans, Louisiana, the oldest of five children born to Nelson Oppenheim, a life insurance salesman, and Ruth Strauss, a teacher. Browne spent much of her childhood in Denver, Colorado and graduated from Rice University in Houston, Texas with a bachelor's degree in behavioral science. The Southern Tier is a geographic subregion of the broader Upstate New York region of New York State, consisting of counties west of the Catskill Mountains in Delaware County and geographically situated along or very near the northern border of Pennsylvania.
