WKFD
WKFD (1370 AM) was a radio station which existed from 1961 until 2001 when its license was deleted after being silent for three years (the station last broadcast on July 29, 1998). WKFD was licensed to the village of Wickford, Rhode Island. The station operated on 1370 kHz with a transmitter power of 250 watts daytime, 130 watts nighttime. Its transmitter was located at 19 Updike Avenue. The station was at one time owned by retired newscaster Lou Adler, who had previously broadcast on WCBS 880. After the WKFD license was deleted, another attempt was made to build 1370 kHz in Rhode Island, this time from Charlestown. Lou Adler (journalist)
Louis Charles Adler (April 18, 1929 – December 22, 2017) was an American radio journalist, director of Quinnipiac University's Ed McMahon Mass Communication Center, and also was Quinnipiac's Fred Friendly-endowed Professor of Broadcast Journalism. Adler was born in Jamestown, New York. A longtime morning news anchor on WCBS in New York, Adler was credited with popularizing the "talk news radio" format on WCBS during the late 1960s. From 1969 to 1980, Adler also served as WCBS' general manager and/or news director, (sometimes concurrently.) Wickford is a small village in the town of North Kingstown, Rhode Island, United States, which is named after Wickford in Essex, England. Wickford is located on the west side of Narragansett Bay, just about a 20-minute drive across two bridges from Newport, Rhode Island. WADK (1540 AM) is a radio station licensed to serve Newport, Rhode Island, United States. The station is owned by 3G Broadcasting, Inc. It airs a news/talk format, with jazz airing each weekend. The station, the first to be built on Aquidneck Island, signed on the air in 1948 and has used the callsign WADK since November 23, 1953. Its broadcast tower has been located off Garfield Street in Newport since 1967. History On December 2, 1947, John E. and Irene "Reeny" A. Malloy, doing business as Voice of Little Rhody, filed for a construction permit to build a new radio station on 1540 kHz at Newport, which was granted by the Federal Communications Commission on August 4, 1948. Its studio is located in Newport, Rhode Island. WMNP broadcasts a Top 40 (CHR) music format that targets southern Rhode Island, Southeastern Connecticut and the South Coast of Massachusetts.
