W8 Wellingborough–Bozeat
Service W8 is a bus service which operates between Wellingborough and Bozeat via Wollaston. History The bus route was operated by Stagecoach in the past prior to being taken over by Centrebus. Following a decision by Northamptonshire County Council to cancel all bus route subsidies, then-operator Centrebus stated that the W8 route would be cut as a result. In November 2019, the service transferred from Centrebus to Grant Palmer. The company had informed the council that the route was no longer viable due to financial pressure and a driver shortage. The council subsequently decided to spend £14,000 on subsidising the route until April 2022. Wellingborough ( ) is a large market and commuter town in the unitary authority area of North Northamptonshire in the ceremonial county of Northamptonshire, England, 65 miles from London and from Northampton on the north side of the River Nene. Originally named "Wendelingburgh" (the stronghold of Wændel's people), the Anglo-Saxon settlement is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as "Wendelburie". The town was granted a royal market charter in 1201 by King John. At the 2011 census, the town's built-up area had a population of 50,577. Bozeat is a village and civil parish in the postal district of Wellingborough, North Northamptonshire, England, about south of Wellingborough on the A509 road, near Wollaston. At the time of the 2011 census, Bozeat's population (including Easton Maudit) was 2,052. Origin of the name Rev. Joseph Horace Marlow gives two possible origins of Bozeat's name: *Bozeat probably existed in Saxon times – Saxon coins have been found – and an early spelling of Bozeat was ''Bosgate'', suggesting Bozeat may have meant ''Bosa(s) gate''. Bosa was a common Saxon name and a Saxon Earl Bosa held land near here. In a similar way Strixton is named after the Saxon thane Strix. In Old English ''geat/gaet'', and in Middle English ''yatt'' and ''zett'' are all recognised as meaning gate, opening or entrance to woods or land. Wollaston is a village and civil parish in North Northamptonshire, England, about south of the market town of Wellingborough. The 2011 census recorded the population of the parish, including Strixton, as 3,491. Wollaston is from above sea level on hills east of the Nene valley. The soil is clay over subsoil and is on the old Wellingborough to London road. Summer Leys Local Nature reserve is nearby. The Domesday Book of 1086 records the toponym as ''Wilavestone''. In a document written in 1190 it is spelt ''Wullaueston''. The name comes from Old English and is believed to mean the farmstead or village of a man named Wulfaf. Northamptonshire County Council was the county council that governed the non-metropolitan county of Northamptonshire in England. It was originally formed in 1889 by the Local Government Act 1888, recreated in 1974 by the Local Government Act 1972 and abolished in 2021.
