W3 Engine
A W engine is a type of piston engine where three or four cylinder (engine), cylinder banks share the same crankshaft, resembling the letter "W" when viewed from the front. W engines with three banks of cylinders are also called "broad arrow" engines, due to their shape resembling the British government broad arrow property mark. The most common W-type engine is the 4-bank type, with the Volkswagen Group experimenting with the Passat W8 and its 4.0 liter, 4-bank W8 engine and later implementing the concept with the group's Bentley division, creating a 6.0 liter W12 engine, W12 in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged variants. Due to the pre-existing VR6 engine, VR-type engine only needing one cylinder head despite having two banks of cylinders, a Volkswagen 4-bank W-type engine is structured more similarly to a conventional 2-bank V engine as opposed to a "true" W engine. Rumpler Tropfenwagen
The Rumpler Tropfenwagen ("Rumpler drop car", named after its raindrop shape) was a car developed by Austrian engineer Edmund Rumpler. The Tropfenwagen Aerodynamics Rumpler, born in Vienna, was known as a designer of aircraft when at the 1921 Berlin car show he introduced the Tropfenwagen. It was to be the first ''streamlined'' production car, before the Chrysler Airflow and Tatra T77. The Rumpler was already wind tunnel optimized at the Aerodynamics Research Institute in Göttingen and had a Automobile drag coefficient, drag coefficient of only 0.28, a value that astonished later engineers when they tested the Tropfenwagen in the 1970s. Allison V-3420
The Allison V-3420 was a large experimental piston aircraft engine, designed in 1937 by the American Allison Engine Company. Design and development In 1937, at the behest of the United States Army Air Corps, the Allison Engine Company agreed to design and build a large-displacement high-power aircraft engine. The resulting V-3420 was essentially a pair of 12-cylinder Allison V-1710 engines mated to a common crankcase with a 30° angle between the inner cylinder banks. The crankshafts of the two V-1710 engines were geared together to drive a common propeller shaft. Most V-3420 parts were interchangeable with those for V-1710-E and -F engines. The V-3420 had a power-to-weight ratio of 1.6 kW/kg or 1 hp/lb, excellent for its time. Life was a Formula One constructor from Modena, Italy. The company was named for its founder, Ernesto Vita ("Vita" is Italian for "Life"). Life first emerged on the Formula One scene in 1990, trying to market their unconventional W12 3.5-litre engine. The team had a disastrous single season, and failed to make the grid in all 14 attempted starts during the 1990 season, often clocking in laps many seconds slower than their next competitor.
