W. S. Bruce Medal
This is a list of recipients of the W. S. Bruce Medal. Established in 1923, the medal is awarded quinquennially for notable contributions to "Zoology, Botany, Geology, Meteorology, Oceanography or Geography, where new knowledge has been gained through a personal visit to polar regions." and is open to researchers of all nationalities, preferably of Scottish birth or origin, and preferably at the outset of their careers. It commemorates the work of Dr William Spiers Bruce, an explorer and scientific investigator in polar regions. The award is made and administered by the Royal Scottish Geographical Society in conjunction with the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Royal Physical Society of Edinburgh. William Spiers Bruce
William Speirs Bruce (1 August 1867 – 28 October 1921) was a British Natural history, naturalist, polar region, polar scientist and Oceanography, oceanographer who organized and led the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition (SNAE, 1902–04) to the South Orkney Islands and the Weddell Sea. Among other achievements, the expedition established the first permanent weather station in Antarctica. Bruce later founded the Scottish Oceanographical Laboratory in Edinburgh, but his plans for a transcontinental Antarctic march via the South Pole were abandoned because of lack of public and financial support. In 1892 Bruce gave up his medical studies at the University of Edinburgh and joined the Dundee Whaling Expedition to Antarctica as a scientific assistant. This was followed by Arctic voyages to Novaya Zemlya, Spitsbergen and Jackson–Harmsworth Expedition, Franz Josef Land.
