W. H. Langley House
W. H. Langley House is a historic home located near Elm City, Wilson County, North Carolina. It was built about 1865 as a simple three-bay single-story dwelling with two exterior end chimneys. It was enlarged and remodelled in the Colonial Revival style in 1911. It is a -story, five-bay, frame dwelling with a steeply pitched gable roof and rear kitchen ell. It features a complex wraparound porch, projecting pedimented pavilions, and Palladian windows on the gable ends. Elm City, North Carolina
Elm City is a town in Wilson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,298 in 2010. History The Elm City Municipal Historic District, W. H. Langley House, and Webb-Barron-Wells House were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. In the summer of 1964, the Ku Klux Klan drove away a group of black and white teenage volunteers repainting the local First Presbyterian Church. Subsequently, adult volunteers returned to finish the job, and Governor Terry Sanford dispatched state troopers to protect the team of integrated volunteers. An attempt was later made by two white youths from Rocky Mount to burn down the church but they failed. Geography Elm City is located at (35.807729, -77.862161). Wilson County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 78,784. The county seat is Wilson. The county comprises the Wilson Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included within the Rocky Mount–Wilson–Roanoke Rapids Combined Statistical Area. History On February 13, 1855, the North Carolina General Assembly established Wilson County "out of portions of Edgecombe, Johnston, Nash, and Wayne Counties." The Colonial Revival architectural style seeks to revive elements of American colonial architecture. The beginnings of the Colonial Revival style are often attributed to the Centennial Exhibition of 1876, which reawakened Americans to the architectural traditions of their colonial past. Fairly small numbers of Colonial Revival homes were built c. 1880–1910, a period when Queen Anne-style architecture was dominant in the United States.
