W.D. Mansfield Memorial Bridge
The W.D. Mansfield Memorial Bridge, commonly known as the Dravosburg Bridge, is a cantilever bridge that carries vehicular traffic across the Monongahela River between McKeesport, Pennsylvania and Dravosburg, Pennsylvania. It is a high-level bridge, passing over railyard, industrial sites, and Route 837, to connect Fifth Avenue in McKeesport and Richland Avenue in Dravosburg. History This structure replaced the low-level 1889 Dravosburg-Reynoldton Bridge. The steel from the Wabash Bridge (Pittsburgh), demolished in 1948, was used in the construction of this bridge. As built, the Mansfield Bridge carried trolley tracks of Pittsburgh Railways route 56 ''McKeesport via 2nd Avenue''. The trolley line was replaced by a bus on September 5, 1963. The bridge is named for McKeesport politician William D. Mansfield, who served as an Allegheny County Commissioner and later as a State Senator. McKeesport is a city in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is situated at the confluence of the Monongahela and Youghiogheny rivers and within the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Wabash Bridge (Pittsburgh)
The Wabash Bridge was a railroad bridge across the Monongahela River at Pittsburgh. It was constructed between 1902 and 1904 by railroad magnate George J. Gould for his Wabash Pittsburgh Terminal Railway. The Wabash Bridge carried rail traffic from the elaborate Wabash Terminal in downtown Pittsburgh to the Wabash Tunnel in Mt. Washington. The rail cars were from the Wabash-Pittsburg Terminal Railroad, an ill-fated venture by George Jay Gould to compete with the Pennsylvania Railroad in Pittsburgh. After less than half a century, the Wabash was considered a “hard luck” bridge, haunted by its history, and an eyesore. In 1946, a fire destroyed the terminal. Pittsburgh Railways was one of the predecessors of Pittsburgh Regional Transit. It had 666 PCC cars, the third largest fleet in North America (after Toronto (745) and Chicago (683)). McKeesport Connecting Railroad Bridge
The McKeesport Connecting Railroad Bridge, also known as the Riverton Bridge, is a bridge that spans the Monongahela River between McKeesport, and Duquesne, Pennsylvania. History The bridge connected the U.S. Steel Duquesne Works and the National Tube Works in McKeesport and was used by Pennsylvania Union Railroad which is owned and operated by Transtar, Inc., the railroad division of U.S. Steel. In the late 1950s/early 1960s the large blast furnace Dorothy (named for the U.S. Steel president's wife) was built to supply steel to both plants, replacing many smaller furnaces. In the 1980s, during the decline of the American steel industry, both mills were closed and razed. The Bridge remained unused for several years, until 2007, when it became part of the Great Allegheny Passage bike trail from the C&O Canal Towpath in Cumberland MD to Pittsburgh PA.
