Võ Thị Sáu
Võ Thị Sáu (1933 – 23 January 1952) was a Vietnamese schoolgirl who fought as a guerilla against the French occupiers of Vietnam, then part of French Indochina. She was captured, tried, convicted and executed by the French colonialists in 1952, becoming the first woman to be executed at Côn Sơn Prison. Today she is considered a Vietnamese national martyr and heroine. Biography She was born in Phước Thọ Commune, Đất Đỏ District, in 1933. At the time, this was part of Bà Rịa Province, but today is a part of Long Đất District, Bà Rịa–Vũng Tàu province. In 1948, she became a contact for a local guerilla group after many of her friends and family joined the Việt Minh. When she was 14 she threw a grenade at a group of French soldiers in the crowded market area, killing 1 of them and injuring 12. She escaped undetected. Côn Đảo
The Côn Đảo ("Côn Island") are an archipelago of Bà Rịa–Vũng Tàu province, in the Southeast region of Vietnam, and also a district () of this province. Geography Situated about from Vũng Tàu and from Ho Chi Minh City, the group includes 16 mountainous islands and islets. The total land area reaches and the local population is about 5,000. Võ Thị Thắng (10 December 1945 – 22 August 2014) was a Vietnamese revolutionary and stateswoman. She served as a member of the Long An delegation to the National Assembly of Vietnam during its fourth, fifth, and sixth sessions. She also served as a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam (eighth and ninth congresses), the Director General of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, the Chairwoman of the Vietnam–Cuba Friendship Association, and the Vice President of the Vietnam Women's Union. Outside of Vietnam, she is most well known for a photograph of her smiling at her sentencing for an attempted assassination during the Vietnam War. The photograph is popularly known as the "Smile of Victory" and has become a symbol of Vietnamese women who fought in the war.
