Värttinä
Värttinä (, meaning "spindle") is a Finnish folk music band that started as a project by Sari and Mari Kaasinen in 1983 in the village of Rääkkylä, in Karelia, the southeastern region of Finland. Many transformations have taken place in the band since then. Värttinä shot into fame with the release of their 1991 album ''Oi Dai''. As of 2009, the band consists of three lead female vocalists supported by three acoustic musicians. The vocalists sing in the Karelian dialect of the Finnish language. In August 2005, Värttinä recorded their tenth studio album called '' Miero'' at Finnvox Studios, Helsinki. It was released on 25 January 2006 in Finland, and 30 January 2006 worldwide. In 2006, Värttinä also released the Värttinä Archive Live DVD, which included material from their 20th anniversary concert and other new and archive material. Värttinä collaborated with A. R. Oi Dai
''Oi Dai'' is Värttinä's 3rd album, and the first after they re-formed in 1990 after losing many members. It was released in 1991 in Finland by Spirit/Polygram. It was a great success, and led to Värttinä touring throughout Europe. In 1994, it was released in the United States by Xenophile Records. It was later re-released in the US by NorthSide. Susan Aho
Susan Aho (born 5 March 1974) is a Finnish folk music singer-songwriter and a member of the Värttinä music group. In 2010, she represented Finland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 as part of the duo Kuunkuiskaajat. Biography Susan Aho was born in Espoo, in Southern Finland, near the capital Helsinki. Having played the accordion since she was 13, Aho joined Värttinä in 1998, replacing Riitta Kossi, and was the accordionist and a vocalist on their album ''Vihma''. By the next album, ''Ilmatar'' (2001) she confined herself to singing, having been replaced as accordionist by Markku Lepistö. She studies at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and is involved in a variety of other projects besides Värttinä. For example, she was vocalist and accordionist in the Greek group Odysseia, was a member of the folk band Metsänväki, and with the Finnish accordionist Minna Luoma played Finnish gypsy songs in the group Rotunaiset. ''Musta Lindu'' (re-released as ''Black Bird''), is Värttinä's 2nd album, released in 1989 by Olarin Musiikki. Like their first album, it is mostly traditional Karelian and Finnish folk songs, with 15 girls singing and playing kantele and 6 young men on acoustic instruments. ''Seleniko'' is the fourth album by Finnish folk group Värttinä, and second after they re-formed in 1990, released in Finland by Spirit and Polygram Finland in 1992. It immediately reached the top of the European World Music radio charts, and remained there for 3 months. In 1993, it was released by Music & Words in Benelux and Xenophile Records in the United States. NorthSide re-released the album in 1998 in the United States. Finnvox Studios
Finnvox Studios is a recording studio located in Pitäjänmäki, Helsinki, Finland. It was founded by Erkki Ertesuo, Kurt Juuranto and Lejos Inc. in 1965 and is the longest running studio recording facility in Finland. The original multi-track recording equipment and continuous technical updates of the studio machines and acoustics soon made Finnvox the most sought after studio in the country. Finnish artists which recorded at Finnvox in the 1970s include Rauli Somerjoki, M. A. Numminen and their bands, Wigwam, Agit-prop and many others. Up until the 1990s, Finnvox also operated a vinyl record mastering and pressing facility, which was later converted in new studio rooms and in a mixing and recording room for film and TV productions. Rääkkylä (; Swedish also ) is a municipality of Finland. It is located in the province of Eastern Finland and is part of the North Karelia region. Mari People
The Mari ( chm, мари; russian: марийцы, mariytsy) are a Finnic people, who have traditionally lived along the Volga and Kama rivers in Russia. Almost half of Maris today live in the Mari El republic, with significant populations in the Bashkortostan and Tatarstan republics.
