Vyacheslav Atavin
Vyacheslav Vladimirovich Atavin (russian: Вячеслав Владимирович Атавин, born February 4, 1967, in Krasnodar) is a former Soviet Union, Soviet and Russian Team handball, handball player. During the Soviet Union, Soviet period of his career Atavin trained at Dynamo (sports society), Dynamo in Astrakhan. He became the Honoured Master of Sports of the USSR in 1988 and competed for the USSR National Team between 1988 and 1991. In 1988 he won the gold medal with the USSR team at the 1988 Summer Olympics. He played all six matches and scored 23 goals. Since 1992 he competed for Russia. Atavin graduated from Astrakhan State Technical University, Astrakhan Institute of Fish Industry and Economics in 1990. Handball at the Summer Olympics refers to two different sports. Field handball was introduced for men at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, but dropped after that. At the 1952 Olympics, field handball was a demonstration sport. (Indoor) handball was introduced for men at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. Unified Sports Classification System of the USSR (russian: Единая Всесоюзная спортивная классификация) is a document which provided general Soviet physical education system requirements for both athletes and coaches. Similar systems still exist today in several former Soviet republics.
