Vuren
Vuren is a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is a part of the municipality of West Betuwe, and is located about 5 km east of Gorinchem. Vuren was a separate municipality until 1986, when it merged with Asperen, Herwijnen, and Heukelum including Spijk. The new municipality was originally called "Vuren", but the name changed to "Lingewaal" in 1987. Before 1816, the municipality of Vuren was named " Dalem". In 2001, the village of Vuren had 1575 inhabitants. Dalem, Netherlands
Dalem is a village in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is located in the municipality of Gorinchem, about 2 km east of the city. It was first mentioned in 1343 as Dalem, and means "low-lying settlement". It should not be confused with the nearby hamlet Laag-Dalem which has become a neighbourhood of Gorinchem. Dalem is a dike village which probably developed around the 11th century along the Boven-Merwede. The Dutch Reformed church is an aisleless church with a doomed roof. An obelisk has been placed on top of the roof. In 2001, it was discovered that the roof had become unstable, and the local congregation could not afford a restoration. In 2004, it was sold to the municipality and restored. Dalem was a separate municipality until 1818, when it was renamed to "Vuren", the name of the other village in the municipality. Herwijnen
Herwijnen is a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is a part of the municipality of West Betuwe, and lies about 11 km east of Gorinchem. Herwijnen was a separate municipality until 1986, when it was merged with Vuren, Asperen, Heukelum and Spijk as municipality of Lingewaal. Heukelum
Heukelum is a city in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is a part of the municipality of West Betuwe, and lies about 8 km northeast of Gorinchem. It received city rights in 1391. History It was first mentioned in 996 as Ukele, and means "settlement on the height". Heukelum is an elongated ''esdorp'' which developed on the river bank of the Linge in the Early Middle Ages. The Dutch Reformed church developed in stages between 1350 and 1510 to replace its predecessor from around 1250. The tower and nave were destroyed by fire in 1699. Asperen
Asperen is a small city in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is a part of the municipality of West Betuwe, and lies about 10 km (6 miles) east of Gorinchem on the river Linge. It received city rights in 1313. History In Roman times Asperen was the location of the Roman settlement Caspingium. The name Asperen was first used in 893. The etymology is unknown.
