Vulcain (watch Company)
Vulcain is a Swiss luxury watchmaker based in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. It was founded in 1858 by Maurice Ditisheim as ''Manufacture Ditisheim' in La Chaux-de-Fonds,'' being rebranded as Vulcain in 1894. In 1947, Vulcain developed the first alarm watch, the Vulcain Cricket. Foundation Vulcain was founded in 1858 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland by the Ditisheim brothers Maurice, Gaspard and Aron. The Ditisheims were one of many Jewish families involved in innovation and modernisation of the watch industry. Within 20 to 30 years, the company grew from a small studio to a successful and well-known brand. Since the brothers were also involved with foreign branches in the industry, they had the advantage of an international network of contacts. In 1886, Maurice bought the company from his brothers. Vulcain (rocket Engine)
Vulcain is a family of European first stage rocket engines for Ariane 5 and the future Ariane 6. Its development began in 1988 and the first flight was completed in 1996. The updated version of the engine, Vulcain 2, was first successfully flown in 2005. Both members of the family use liquid oxygen/liquid hydrogen cryogenic fuel. The new version under development for Ariane 6 will be called Vulcain 2.1. History The Vulcain rocket engine is named in French for Vulcan, the ancient Roman god of fire. Its development, carried out by a European partnership, began in 1988 with the Ariane 5 rocket program. It first flew in 1996 powering the ill-fated flight 501 without being the cause of the disaster, and had its first successful flight in 1997 (flight 502). ''Vulcain'' (M611) is a ''Vulcain''-class minesweeper of the French Navy. She is classed by the French Navy as a BBPD type vessel (French: ''bâtiment-base de plongeurs démineurs'') and is used as a base ship for clearance divers. She is based in Cherbourg Naval Base, in Cherbourg, France, and is run by the 1st GPD ''Groupement de Plongeurs démineurs'', a group of French Army clearance divers. The Vulcan Award of the Technical Artist (french: Prix Vulcain de l’Artiste Technicien) is an independent film award created in 2003. It rewards the work of a technician for his or her collaboration in the creation of a film from the official selection of the Cannes Film Festival. It is awarded by a special jury, appointed by the ''Superior Technical Commission of Image and Sound'' (french: Commission Supérieure Technique de l’Image et du Son or CST). History In 1951, the CST created the ''Technical Grand Prize'' (french: Grand Prix Technique) of the CST, awarded during the Cannes Film Festival. That prize existed until 2001.
