Archers of Loaf vs. The Greatest of All Time (often shortened to either "Greatest of all Time" or simply GOAT) is the first EP by North Carolina indie rock band Archers of Loaf. The EP was recorded shortly after their first album ''Icky Mettle'', and the styles are very similar. The cover art for the EP includes a photograph of former Toronto Maple Leafs star King Clancy. Critical reception Robert Christgau gave the EP an A− grade, writing that the Archers of Loaf "...sound like a live band ready to service a living audience, their gleeful anger felt rather than assumed." Archers Of Loaf
Archers of Loaf is an American indie rock band originally formed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in 1991. The group toured extensively and released four studio albums, one compilation, numerous singles and EPs, and a live album which was released after the band broke up in 1998. In 2011 the band began a reunion tour that coincided with the reissue of four of its albums by Merge Records. In July 2022, the band announced the release of their first album in nearly twenty-five years, ''Reason in Decline'', released also via Merge Records in October of the same year. Alias Records
Alias Records is a small American indie-rock record label based in Lexington, Kentucky. Alias has released albums by American Music Club, Archers of Loaf, Yo La Tengo, The Magnolias, The Loud Family, Too Much Joy and Knapsack, among others. Alias Records was formed in 1988 in San Francisco, California, affiliated with Recording Studio SOMA Sync. The following year Alias Records opened a second office under the guidance of owner Delight Hanover-Jenkins in Burbank, California, and was affiliated with the recording studio Royaltone Studio. Hanover-Jenkins oversaw the development of both companies. The roster included Archers of Loaf. Having several releases in the Alias catalog, a deal was made with Merge Records in 2011 to re-issue four of the LPs with various singles and outtakes. ''Icky Mettle'' is the first studio album recorded by the indie rock band Archers of Loaf. It was produced and engineered by Caleb Southern at Kraptone Studios in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and released by Alias Records on September 7, 1993. A deluxe reissue of the album was released by Merge Records in 2011. The album was recorded and mixed in seven days. According to Eric Bachmann, "We spent like $5,000 to make it." ''Vee Vee'' is the second studio album by the American indie rock band Archers of Loaf, released in March 1995 by Alias Records. The album received very positive reviews from critics. Recording and release ''Vee Vee'' was recorded in Chicago, Illinois, in August 1994 and produced by the band and Bob Weston. It was released in March 1995 by the independent record label Alias Records. "Harnessed in Slums" was released as the album's single, and it got considerable airplay on college and alternative rock radio stations. A 2-disc reissue of the album, containing several rarities, demos, and B-sides, was released on February 21, 2012, by Merge Records. Critical reception ''Vee Vee'' received very positive reviews from critics. King Clancy
Francis Michael "King" Clancy (February 25, 1902 – November 8, 1986) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player, referee, coach and executive. Clancy played 16 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs. He was a member of three Stanley Cup championship teams and won All-Star honours. After he retired in 1937, he remained in hockey, becoming a coach for the Montreal Maroons. Clancy next worked as a referee for the NHL. He joined the Maple Leafs organization and worked in the organization as a coach and team executive until his death in 1986. In 2017 Clancy was named one of the '100 Greatest NHL Players' in history. Clancy's nickname "King" originates from his father Tom, who was the first 'King Clancy' and played football with the Ottawa Rough Riders. Eric Bachmann is an American multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer. He rose to prominence as the frontman of Archers of Loaf and Crooked Fingers. Originally a saxophone major at Appalachian State University, Bachmann’s music is distinctive for its creative and innovative arrangements. In addition to the guitar, he plays the piano and banjo regularly on tour. He was born in Greensboro, North Carolina, and grew up throughout the Southern United States.
