Vries (Drenthe)
Vries is a village in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Tynaarlo, and lies about 8 km north of Assen. Vries was a separate municipality until 1998, when it was merged with Eelde and Zuidlaren into a new municipality called Tynaarlo. History The village was first mentioned in 1139 as Vrees. The etymology is unclear. Vries is an ''esdorp'' which developed in the Early Middle Ages. The old village structure is still visible. The Dutch Reformed church dates from the 12th century. It was extended around 1425. The church contains two sarcophagi. Vries was home to 415 people in 1840. Vries used to be independent municipality. Assen () is a municipality and a city in the northeastern Netherlands, and is the capital (politics), capital of the province of Drenthe. It received City rights in the Netherlands, city rights in 1809. Geesje Mesdag-van Calcar
Geesje Mesdag-van Calcar (1850–1936) was a Dutch painter. She is known for her landscape, flower, and genre paintings. Biography Mesdag-van Calcar was born 2 July 1850 in Hoogezand. She attended the Academie Minerva in Groningen She also studied with Paul Gabriël in Paris. She married fellow painter Taco Mesdag (1829–1902) and the couple settled in The Hague. Both were members of the Pulchri Studio and also associated with the Hague School. They also owned property in Vries, Drenthe where they painted in the summer. Mesdag-van Calcar exhibited her work at the Palace of Fine Arts at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. She received an honorable mention at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1889. After her husband's death in 1902, Mesdag-van Calcar moved to Kortenhoef, where she built a studio. A sarcophagus (plural sarcophagi or sarcophaguses) is a box-like funeral receptacle for a corpse, most commonly carved in stone, and usually displayed above ground, though it may also be buried. __NOTOC__ An ''Angerdorf'' (plural: ''Angerdörfer'') is a type of village that is characterised by the houses and farmsteads being laid out around a central grassed area, the ''anger'' (from the Old High German ''angar'' =pasture or grassy place), a village green which was common land, owned jointly by the village community. The ''anger'' is usually in the shape of a lens or an eye, but may also take other forms: a rectangle, triangle, circle or semi-circle (illustrated). The buildings are oriented with their eaves facing the road. Livestock stalls and barns are at the rear of the plot (in Austria called the '' Hintaus'') and may be linked by a farm track that runs around the village forming an outer ring. Zuidlaren
Zuidlaren ( Noordenvelds: ''Zuudlaoren'') is a village in the province of Drenthe in the Northern Netherlands. Zuidlaren has just over 10,000 inhabitants and is situated on natural heightened land which is called the Hondsrug. The village is part of the municipality of Tynaarlo. Formerly the village had its own municipality called Zuidlaren, but in 1998 Zuidlaren merged with Eelde and Vries. Eelde
Eelde () is a town in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Tynaarlo, and lies about 9 km south of Groningen. Groningen Airport Eelde is located near the village. Eelde was a separate municipality until 1998, when it was merged with Vries and Zuidlaren. During the 20th century, the villages of Eelde and Paterswolde have merged into one, "Eelde-Paterswolde". In 2012, Eelde counted 6,660 inhabitants, and Paterswolde 3,680, together 10,340 inhabitants. Postal codes in the Netherlands, known as ''postcodes'', are alphanumeric, consisting of four digits followed by two uppercase letters.
