Von Hügel Institute
The Von Hügel Institute (VHI) is an academic research institute based at St Edmund's College, Cambridge, a constituent part of the University of Cambridge in England. Founded in 1987, it is named after Anatole von Hügel (1854–1928), naturalist and co-founder (with the Henry Fitzalan-Howard, 15th Duke of Norfolk) of St Edmund's College. It was established, according to the College's Ordinances, to 'preserve and develop the Roman Catholic tradition of the College' by carrying out research on Catholic Social Teaching, on the relationship between Christianity and society, and on issues of social justice. The institute has been directed by Rev Chris Moss SJ, the Rev Frank McHugh, Rev Frank Carey WF, Professor David Bridges, Rev David Clark and Professor John Loughlin (political scientist), John Loughlin. Alan Hopes
Alan Stephen Hopes (born 17 March 1944) is a British Roman Catholic prelate, and former Anglican priest. From 2013 - 2022 he served as the Bishop of East Anglia and is currently the Apostolic Administrator of the same diocese until the installation of his successor on 14 December 2022. He previously served as an auxiliary bishop of Westminster and titular bishop of Cuncacestre. He is an Honorary Fellow of St Edmund's College, Cambridge. Early life and education Hopes was born in Oxford, England on 17 March 1944. He was educated at Oxford High School until he moved to London in 1956, when he attended Enfield Grammar School. In 1963 he began a degree in theology at King's College London, graduating in 1966. Bernard Longley
Bernard Longley (born 5 April 1955) is an English prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He was named the Archbishop of Birmingham on 1 October 2009, and installed on 8 December 2009. Early life and ministry Bernard Longley was born in Openshaw, Manchester, and was educated at St Vincent de Paul parish school, then at Xaverian College in Rusholme. He later studied at the Royal Northern College of Music and New College, Oxford. He then was in formation for the priesthood at St John's Seminary, Wonersh where he was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton on 12 December 1981. Denys Turner
Denys Alan Turner (born 5 August 1942) is a British-born American philosopher and theologian. He is Horace Tracy Pitkin Professor of Historical Theology emeritus at Yale University having been appointed in 2005, previously having been Norris–Hulse Professor of Divinity at the University of Cambridge. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree in philosophy from the University of Oxford. He has written widely on political theory and social theory in relation to Christian theology, as well as on medieval thought, in particular, mystical theology and Christian mysticism. Prior to his position at Cambridge, he was Professor of Theology and Head of Department at the University of Birmingham and has also held Head of Department at the University of Bristol. Stanley Hauerwas
Stanley Martin Hauerwas (born July 24, 1940) is an American theologian, ethicist, and public intellectual. Hauerwas was a longtime professor at Duke University, serving as the Gilbert T. Rowe Professor of Theological Ethics at Duke Divinity School with a joint appointment at the Duke University School of Law. In the fall of 2014, he also assumed a chair in theological ethics at the University of Aberdeen. Before moving to Duke and the University of Aberdeen, Hauerwas taught at the University of Notre Dame. Rowan Williams
Rowan Douglas Williams, Baron Williams of Oystermouth, (born 14 June 1950) is a Welsh Anglican bishop, theologian and poet. Mary McAleese
Mary Patricia McAleese ( ; ga, Máire Pádraigín Mhic Ghiolla Íosa; ; born 27 June 1951) is an Irish activist lawyer and former politician who served as the eighth president of Ireland from November 1997 to November 2011. She is an academic and author and holds a licentiate and doctorate in Canon law. McAleese was first elected as president in 1997, having received the nomination of Fianna Fáil. She succeeded Mary Robinson, making her the second female president of Ireland, and the first woman in the world to succeed another woman as president. John Loughlin (political Scientist)
John Loughlin (born 1948) is a British-based academic and educator from Northern Ireland, and a noted specialist in European territorial politics. After being educated in St. Malachy's College, he spent several years as a Cistercian monk at Our Lady of Bethlehem Abbey, Portglenone, Portglenone, Northern Ireland, where he carried out the usual studies for the priesthood in philosophy, theology and biblical studies.
