Volleyball Jargon
This is a list of the more common English volleyball jargon terms: Common terms *Ace: A serve which lands in the opponent's court without being touched, or is touched but unable to be kept in play by one or more receiving team players. *Assist: Usually the second of a team's three contacts, an assist is awarded for any set ball that results in a kill on the ensuing attack. *Attack: Usually the third of a team's three contacts, an attack is any attempt by the offense to score a point against the defense (this does not include free balls or over-passes). *Breakpoint: A point scored on the team's own serve. In the scoring system prior to 1999, these were the only scored points (except for sanction points). English Language
English is a West Germanic language of the Indo-European language family, with its earliest forms spoken by the inhabitants of early medieval England. It is named after the Angles, one of the ancient Germanic peoples that migrated to the island of Great Britain. Existing on a dialect continuum with Scots, and then closest related to the Low Saxon and Frisian languages, English is genealogically West Germanic. However, its vocabulary is also distinctively influenced by dialects of France (about 29% of Modern English words) and Latin (also about 29%), plus some grammar and a small amount of core vocabulary influenced by Old Norse (a North Germanic language). Randy Stoklos
Randy Stoklos (born December 13, 1960) is a retired professional beach volleyball player. He is the first player to earn $1,000,000 playing competitive beach volleyball. He won one U.S. championship and Five World championships with Sinjin Smith. He is a four-time winner of the Manhattan Beach Open. Stoklos played college volleyball at UCLA. He left UCLA early to focus on beach volleyball. He won his first Manhattan Open teaming with Jim Menges in 1981. Stoklos has 123 career wins (which ranks Stoklos third of all-time), amassed almost two million dollars in prize money and received numerous MVP and Best Setter awards. In 1992, he reflected on his father's unwillingness to allow him to play volleyball at the beach. His father was a Pole who survived a German work camp noted in the LA Times as a "harsh old-country type" who was afraid his son would grow up to be lazy if he spent too much time at the beach. Association Of Volleyball Professionals
The Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) is the biggest and longest-running professional beach volleyball tour in the United States. Founded in 1983, the AVP is headquartered in Newport Beach, California. The AVP operates as a 3-tiered development system with AVPFirst, a youth program; AVPNext, a developmental circuit; and the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour itself. History 19831997: Origins and early history The AVP was formed in 1983 as a player's union. Following a dispute with a private promoter at the 1984 World Championships in Redondo Beach, California, the AVP began organizing its own men's tour in 1984. The 1985 AVP tour included stops in eight U.S. states with a total prize money of US$275,000. Sean Rosenthal
Sean Michael Rosenthal (born June 19, 1980) is an American beach volleyball player, playing as a defender. He is best known for his high leaping ability, which has earned him the nickname of "Superman". Rosenthal has an entourage called "Rosie's Raiders", which is composed of close friends of his who enjoy going to his various tournaments to support him. He and his former partner, Jake Gibb, represented the United States at the 2008 Olympic Games and 2012 Olympic Games in beach volleyball. Personal life Sean Rosenthal was born in Torrance, California. He was raised by his mother, Laura Hurlburt. He attended Redondo Union High School. Rosenthal is married to Kayce Matthess and has three children with her. Professional career At the age of 16, he made his professional debut in the AVP. Anjinho Bacil
Eduardo Jorge "Anjinho" Bacil Filho (born March 11, 1971) is a Brazilian professional volleyball and beach volleyball player. Biography He was the first Brazilian and the first foreign player ever to win an Association of Volleyball Professionals tournament in America. Fellow AVP alumni Stein Metzger has given Bacil the credit for inventing the "Steino" Pokey shot. In 2011, he Earned his first outdoor domestic title at the Huntington Beach open with Scott Ayakatubby, and in 1995, he won his first AVP title with José Loiola indoors at Washington, D.C. Stein Metzger
Stein Metzger (born November 17, 1972, in Honolulu, Hawaii) is a male beach volleyball player from the United States. He played college men's indoor volleyball at UCLA where he won 3 NCAA National championships under legendary coach Al Scates. Metzger competed in the AVP. In 2006 he played with his high school teammate, Mike Lambert, and they advanced to the Final Four in fourteen of the fifteen team events, winning five times. They formed the only team to not have a losing record against any other team that season. Metzger made his Olympic beach volleyball debut at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, where he and partner Dax Holdren finished fifth, after having won the silver medal the previous year at the 2003 Beach Volleyball World Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Volleyball
Volleyball is a team sport in which two teams of six players are separated by a net. Each team tries to score points by grounding a ball on the other team's court under organized rules. It has been a part of the official program of the Summer Olympic Games since Tokyo 1964. Beach volleyball was introduced to the programme at the Atlanta 1996. The adapted version of volleyball at the Summer Paralympic Games is sitting volleyball. The complete set of rules is extensive, but play essentially proceeds as follows: a player on one of the teams begins a 'rally' by serving the ball (tossing or releasing it and then hitting it with a hand or arm), from behind the back boundary line of the court, over the net, and into the receiving team's court.
