Volleyball At The 2007 Pan American Games
The volleyball competitions at the 2007 Pan American Games were held from 14 to 19 July for the women and from 23 to 28 July for the men. The competitions were held at Ginásio do Maracanãzinho, located near the Estádio do Maracanã. Competition format In both the men's and the women's competition eight teams participated of the tournament. The teams were divided in two groups of four teams each. The teams played against each other once within their groups. The two best placed teams of each group advanced to the semifinals. The teams which finished in the third and fourth place of their groups competed for the fifth and seventh places, playing the third-placed team of a group against the fourth-placed team of the other group. The winners competed for the fifth place and the losers competed for the seventh place. The semifinal winners competed for the gold medal while the losers competed for the bronze medal. Ginásio Do Maracanãzinho
Ginásio Gilberto Cardoso or Ginásio do Maracanãzinho, sometimes called just Maracanãzinho ("Little Maracanã" or "Mini Maracanã"), is an indoor arena located in Maracanã in the north zone of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is used mostly for volleyball. Its formal name, Ginásio Gilberto Cardoso, honors a former Clube de Regatas do Flamengo president. The capacity of the arena is 11,800 and it was opened in 1954. It stands next to the Maracanã Stadium. History Maracanãzinho's construction started on April 13, 1954 and lasted for only five months. It was built by Construtora Prolar S.A. The architects were Rafael Galvão, Pedro Paulo Bernardes Bastos, Orlando Azevedo and Antônio Dias Carneiro, the engineer was Joaquim Cardoso. Daymi de La Caridad Ramirez Echevarria (born 8 October 1983) is a Cuban volleyball player who competed in the 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympics. In 2004, she was a member of the Cuban team which won the bronze medal in the Olympic tournament. Four years later she finished fourth with the Cuban team in the 2008 Olympic tournament. Ricardo Santos (beach Volleyball)
Ricardo Alex Costa Santos (born January 6, 1975 in Salvador da Bahia) is a beach volleyball player from Brazil. Santos won the silver medal in the men's beach volleyball competition at the 2000 Summer Olympics with partner Zé Marco de Melo. Santos also represented his native country at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. There he claimed the gold medal, teaming up with Emanuel Rego, with whom he won the world title in October 2003. The same pairing went on to win the bronze medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Cindy Carolina Rondón Martínez (born 12 November 1988 in Santo Domingo) is a volleyball player from the Dominican Republic, who twice won the bronze medal with the Dominican women's national team at the NORCECA Championship. Carmen Rosa Caso Sierra (born November 29, 1981 in Santo Domingo) is a retired volleyball player from the Dominican Republic, who won the bronze medal with the Dominican women's national team at the 2007 NORCECA Championship. Áurea Esther "Aury" Cruz Dalmau (born January 10, 1982) is an indoor and beach volleyball player from Puerto Rico who competed for the Puerto Rico national team at the 2008 Olympic Qualification Tournament in Japan, where she was named Best Server at the event. Tayyiba Haneef
Tayyiba Mumtaz Haneef-Park (born March 23, 1979) is a retired American indoor volleyball player. She played at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, where the team finished in 5th place. Haneef-Park also competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where she won a silver medal with team USA. After her pregnancy in 2010, she returned to Team USA to repeat their silver medal performance at the 2012 London Olympics. Both times USA lost to Brazil.
