The ''Volksblad'' (English: People's Journal) is an Afrikaans-language daily newspaper published in Bloemfontein, South Africa, and distributed in the Free State and Northern Cape provinces, where it is the largest Afrikaans daily. It is South Africa's oldest Afrikaans newspaper. The paper is owned by Media24. History ''VOLKSBLAD'', the oldest Afrikaans daily newspaper in South Africa, made its first appearance on 18 November 1904 in Potchefstroom in the form of ''Het Westen'', a Dutch weekly with four pages with Hendrik de Graaf as the founder owner. The paper devoted itself to the interests and development of the Afrikaner people of the former independent Orange Free State and Transvaal Republics in the aftermath of the Second Anglo-Boer War (1899–1902). ''Het Westen'' changed its name to ''Het Volksblad'' on 26 March 1915, because it was no longer a regional newspaper for the then Western Transvaal, but rather a fully-fledged newspaper for the "nation" or volk. Bloemfontein, ( ; , "fountain of flowers") also known as Bloem, is one of South Africa's three capital cities and the capital of the Free State (province), Free State province. It serves as the country's judicial capital, along with legislative capital Cape Town and Administration (government), administrative capital Pretoria. Bloemfontein is the seventh-largest city in South Africa. Free State Province
The Free State, known as Orange Free State until the 28th of June 1995 when its name was changed, is a province of South Africa. Its capital is Bloemfontein, which is also South Africa's judicial capital. Its historical origins lie in the Boer republic called the Orange Free State and later Orange Free State Province. Annelie Botes
Annelie Botes (born ''Annelie Basson''; June 1957) is a South African writer in the Afrikaans language. Life Annelie Basson was born on a farm near Grootfontein near the village of Uniondale (Cape Province). She holds a teaching degree in music (piano) from the University of South Africa (1986). She is the author of fifty short stories and novels published in magazines Huisgenoot, Sarie and Rooi Rose. She writes a regular column in Volksblad and Die Burger. In November 2010, in an interview with the newspaper Rapport, she caused controversy by declaring that she did not like black people or understand them. Following the statements, the newspaper ''Die Burger'' decided to withdraw her column. She refused to retract her remarks and to condemn them. She added that it was "perhaps unfair" to put all black people in the same category. Afrikaans Language
