Voices New Zealand Chamber Choir
Voices New Zealand Chamber Choir was formed in 1998. It is a semi-professional mixed chamber choir consisting of a core of 16 to 24 members with additional singers who can be engaged should they be required for specific repertoire. It is governed by the Choirs Aotearoa New Zealand Trust (which also governs the New Zealand Youth Choir and NZYC Alumni Choir) and the Chief Executive of the Trust is Roger Lloyd, who has held this position since late 2010. It has performed extensively throughout New Zealand, and has also attended a number of international festivals and competitions. It has been conducted since its formation by Dr Karen Grylls, an associate professor at the University of Auckland. In 2011 Voices New Zealand Chamber Choir will represent New Zealand at the 9th World Choral Symposium in Argentina. Karen Grylls
Karen Lesley Grylls (born 9 July 1951) is a New Zealand choral conductor. She is an associate professor in choral conducting at the University of Auckland and founder of Voices New Zealand Chamber Choir. Early life and education Grylls was born in Pahiatua on 9 July 1951. As her father worked for the Post Office, the family moved around the country during her childhood. She was educated at Napier Girls' High School, Hokitika High School, and Central Southland College, where she was dux in 1968. Grylls completed Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Music degrees at the University of Otago in 1973, followed by a Diploma of Teaching from the University of Canterbury in 1974. In 1980, she gained a Master of Music degree at the University of Auckland. She then gained a Master of Music in choral conducting in 1983 and a PhD in 1993, both from the University of Washington in Seattle. New Zealand Youth Choir
The New Zealand Youth Choir is a mixed choir consisting of around 50 singers, auditioned nationally every 3 years from around New Zealand. The choir accepts members aged between 18 and 25 at the time of audition, and places will generally be offered for three years. The choir was formed in 1979 by Guy Jansen and has subsequently been conducted by Professor Peter Godfrey (1980 to 1988), Dr Karen Grylls (1989 to 2010) and David Squire (since 2011). As at February 2015, Dr Grylls is an associate professor and head of choral studies at the University of Auckland. The choir is governed by the Choirs Aotearoa New Zealand Trust (which also governs Voices New Zealand Chamber Choir and the NZYC Alumni Choir). The Chief Executive of the Trust is Arne Herrmann, who has held this position since mid 2016.
