Vladimir Malenkikh
Vladimir Malenkikh (born October 1, 1980) is a Russian former professional ice hockey defenceman who played most notably in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). He was drafted 157th overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the fifth round of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. Playing career Malenkikh started his career with Lada Togliatti in 1999 and remained with the team until 2005. He spent the next six seasons with Metallurg Magnitogorsk, staying with the team until the conclusion of the 2010-11 KHL season. Malenkikh signed with Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod on May 12, 2011, joining the team with long-time friend Alexander Yevseyenkov. On June 6, 2018, Malenkikh ended his 20 year professional career, announcing his retirement however continuing his association with Lada Togliatti, remaining as an assistant coach for their MHL junior club. Defenceman (ice Hockey)
Defence or defense (in American English) in ice hockey is a player position that is primarily responsible for preventing the opposing team from scoring. They are often referred to as defencemen, D, D-men or blueliners (the latter a reference to the blue line in ice hockey which represents the boundary of the offensive zone; defencemen generally position themselves along the line to keep the puck in the zone). They were once called cover-point. In regular play, two defencemen complement three forwards and a goaltender on the ice. The Pittsburgh Penguins are a team in the National Hockey League (NHL). History Joe Daley became the first of 20 players selected by the Penguins in the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft on June 6, 1967. The next day, the Penguins participated in their first amateur draft, where they selected Steve Rexe second overall. The Penguins obtained the first-overall pick in 1984, and selected Mario Lemieux from the Laval Voisins of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). Lemieux won the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL's best rookie in 1985. The Russian Superleague (russian: Чемпионат России Суперлига, ''Russian Championship Superleague''), commonly abbreviated as RSL, was the highest division of the main professional ice hockey league in Russia. It was considered the second best league in the world, after the National Hockey League (NHL) of North America. It was a part of the Russian Pro Hockey League which was composed of three divisions — the Superleague, Major League (''Vysshaya Liga''), and First League (''Pervaya Liga''). 1999 NHL Entry Draft
The 1999 NHL Entry Draft was the 37th NHL Entry Draft. It was held on June 26 at the FleetCenter in Boston. According to ''Sports Illustrated'' and other sports news agencies, at the time the 1999 draft was considered one of the deepest in talent in years, headed by Patrik Stefan and the Sedin twins, Daniel and Henrik. As a result of the draft lottery, the first three picks going into draft day were held by the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Atlanta Thrashers expansion team, and the Vancouver Canucks, respectively. The Canucks were determined to select both Sedins and therefore initiated a trading carousel involving multiple teams. After the trading was done, the Lightning had traded out of the first round altogether while the Thrashers held the first overall pick.
