Vivian Edwards
Vivian Edwards (September 10, 1896 – December 4, 1949) was an American actress of silent film. Biography Born in Los Angeles in 1896, Edwards began her film career with the Keystone Film Company. A 1916 magazine article described her as "one of Mack Sennet's most charming fun-makers." She often played in Charlie Chaplin's earliest films in 1914 and 1915. Her role as one of the Goo Goo sisters in ''The Property Man'', starring Chaplin was one of her most memorable roles. She is credited in 57 silent films. In 1926, she married director, Bryan Foy. They had one daughter, Mary Jane (Foy) Landstrom. ''Dough and Dynamite'' is a 1914 American comedy silent film made by Keystone Studios starring Charlie Chaplin. Plot The story involves Chaplin and Chester Conklin working as waiters at a restaurant. Charlie is especially inept and his comic carelessness enrages the customers. The workers in the restaurant's bakery go on strike for more pay, but are fired by the unsympathetic proprietor. Charlie is put to work in the bakery where his lack of skills upsets his boss and co-worker Chester Conklin. Meanwhile, the vengeful strikers have arranged to smuggle a loaf of bread concealing a stick of dynamite into the bakery. During a free-for-all involving Charlie, Chester, and their boss, the dynamite dramatically explodes. At the end of the film, Charlie emerges groggily from a pile of sticky dough. ''His New Profession'' is a 1914 American comedy silent film made at the Keystone Studios and starring Charlie Chaplin. The film involves Chaplin taking care of a man in a wheelchair. It is also known as "The Good for Nothing". Synopsis The Tramp is hired by a man to wheel his invalid uncle around a seaside park for a while. Although he begins his new job with enthusiasm, the Tramp soon thinks he should be earning extra money for his efforts to spend at a nearby saloon. Accordingly, he takes a beggar's sign and tin and puts them on the wheelchair of the man he is taking care of. As soon as someone puts money into the tin, the Tramp takes the money and spends it at the saloon. The film ends in chaos that involves the Tramp, a pretty girl, the beggar, two park policemen, the old man, and the old man's nephew. It is the tenth film directed by Chaplin. Plot The film revolves around making films at Keystone Studios. Charlie plays an actor who bungles several scenes and is kicked off the studio. The next day a strange, beautiful woman appears to audition for the film - it's Charlie in disguise. After doing a perfect impersonation of a female, Charlie has drawn the attention of the director who hires the new "actress" for his films. The director gives the beautiful woman the men's dressing room to change in. While there, Charlie returns to his tramp costume. ''The Face on the Bar Room Floor'' is a short subject, short film written and directed by Charles Chaplin in 1914. Chaplin stars in this film, loosely based on The Face on the Barroom Floor (poem), the poem of the same name by Hugh Antoine d'Arcy. Synopsis A devastated tramp (Charlie Chaplin) visits a crowd-filled bar and recounts the story of how he fell in love with a woman and then had her taken by a friend of his. Drunk, he keeps trying to draw the woman's picture on the floor with a piece of chalk, and gets into fights with other men in the process. He eventually passes out “dead drunk” (thus deviating from the poem, where the protagonist actually falls “dead”) at the end of the film. According to Chaplin expert Gerald D. McDonald, "The subtitles of the film were lines from the poem, but the original verses were altered to match the Keystone credo that life is a funny game at best."
