Viva Festival
''¡Viva! Spanish and Latin American Film Festival'' is an annual festival, established in 1995, that is dedicated to the promotion and appreciation of Spanish and Latin American cinema. It takes place at HOME, Manchester (2015 onward), having previously taken place at Cornerhouse, Manchester (1995 - 2015). ''¡Viva!'' is the only UK festival dedicated to the promotion of Spanish and Latin American cinema. It is produced by HOME (previously Cornerhouse) in partnership with Manchester’s Instituto Cervantes and with The University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University. It presents a wide range of Spanish language films from across the globe. The week-long festival is also committed to the teaching of Spanish and Latin American culture, and offers study sessions and engagement events for the general public, GCSE and A-Level students and teachers. HOME (Manchester)
HOME is an arts centre in Manchester, a central part of the city’s artistic ecology, and an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation. Since opening in 2015, HOME has built a reputation for high-quality, adventurous cultural programming and for supporting emerging and mid-career talent regionally and nationally. With five cinemas, two theatres and 500m2 gallery space, it is one of the few arts organisations to commission, produce and present work across film, theatre and visual art. Cornerhouse
Cornerhouse was a centre for cinema and the contemporary visual arts, located next to Oxford Road Station on Oxford Street, Manchester, England, which was active from 1985–2015. It had three floors of art galleries, three cinemas, a bookshop, a bar and a café bar. Cornerhouse was operated by Greater Manchester Arts Centre Ltd, a registered charity. The buildings Cornerhouse occupied two buildings. The main building, 70 Oxford Street, was built for John Shaw in the early 1900s and was a furniture store run by the family until it closed in 1985. The building on the other side of the approach to Oxford Road station was designed by Peter Cummings, completed in 1934 and opened as a cinema, Tatler News Theatre, in May 1935. Instituto Cervantes (the Cervantes Institute) is a worldwide nonprofit organization created by the government of Spain, Spanish government in 1991. José Juan Bigas Luna (19 March 1946 – 5 April 2013) was a Spanish film director, designer and artist. His films are typically characterised by a strong emphasis on the erotic, often related to food, something for which he admitted a strong passion. His work often explores and parodies clichés of Spanish identity, but he had an international career and has made films in Spanish, Catalan, Italian, French and English. Julio Medem Lafont (born 21 October 1958) is a Basque film director, producer, editor, and screenwriter. Biography Medem was born on 21 October 1958 in San Sebastián, Basque Country, Spain and showed an interest in movies since childhood, when he would take his father's Super 8 camera and shoot at night, while nobody was paying attention. After college graduation (where he earned degrees in Medicine and General Surgery) he worked as a film critic and later as a screenwriter, assistant director and editor. Icíar Bollaín Pérez-Mínguez (born 12 June 1967) is a Spanish filmmaker and actress. Early life and education Icíar Bollaín Pérez-Mínguez was born in Madrid on 12 June 1967. She was one of twin girls to a father who was an aeronautical engineer and a mother who was a music teacher. She grew up in a liberal household in which each member was allowed to follow their own inclination.
