Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl Of Strafford
Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford, (13 April 1593 ( N.S.)12 May 1641), was an English statesman and a major figure in the period leading up to the English Civil War. He served in Parliament and was a supporter of King Charles I. From 1632 to 1640 he was Lord Deputy of Ireland, where he established a strong authoritarian rule. Recalled to England, he became a leading advisor to the King, attempting to strengthen the royal position against Parliament. When Parliament condemned Lord Strafford to death, Charles reluctantly signed the death warrant and Strafford was executed. He had been advanced several times in the Peerage of England during his career, being created 1st Baron Wentworth in 1628, 1st Viscount Wentworth in 1629, and, finally, 1st Earl of Strafford in January 1640. Baron Wentworth is a title in the Peerage of England. It was created in 1529 for Thomas Wentworth, who was also ''de jure'' sixth Baron le Despencer of the 1387 creation. The title was created by writ, which means that it can descend via female lines (according to the male-preference cognatic primogeniture). History Wentworth family Thomas Wentworth was created first Baron in 1529. He was succeeded by his son, also Thomas Wentworth. The second Baron represented Suffolk in the House of Commons and served as Deputy of Calais. His grandson, Thomas Wentworth, the fourth Baron, was created Earl of Cleveland in the Peerage of England in 1626. He later became a prominent Royalist commander in the Civil War. The earldom became extinct on Lord Cleveland's death in 1667. Edward Noel, 1st Viscount Wentworth
Edward Noel, 1st Viscount Wentworth (30 August 1715 – 31 October 1774) was a British peer. Early life Edward Noel was born on 30 August 1715. Wentworth was the eldest son (of six sons and a daughter) of Sir Clobery Noel, 5th Baronet, of Kirkby Mallory, and the former Elizabeth Rowney. His father served as MP for Leicestershire from 1727 until his death in 1733. His paternal grandparents were Sir John Noel, 4th Baronet and the former Mary Clobery (daughter and co-heiress of Sir John Clobery, of Bradstone). His uncle was William Noel, MP for Stamford and West Looe. His maternal grandfather was Thomas Rowney, MP for Oxford. He was educated at Eton College. Career On 30 July 1733 he succeeded to his father's baronetcy. On 18 July 1745 he succeeded his first cousin twice removed, Martha Johnson, 8th Baroness Wentworth, as Baron Wentworth and assumed his seat in the House of Lords. Thomas Noel, 2nd Viscount Wentworth (18 November 1745 – 17 April 1815) was a British politician who succeeded to a peerage before he could take his seat in the House of Commons, having just been elected in 1774. Early life Wentworth was the only son of Edward Noel, 1st Viscount Wentworth and his wife, Judith Lamb, daughter of William Lamb of Wellesborough, Leicestershire. His sister, the Hon. Judith Noel, married Sir Ralph Milbanke, 6th Baronet. He was educated at Eton and, having matriculated at Brasenose College, Oxford on 4 November 1763, was awarded MA on 29 April 1766. Career At the 1774 general election, Noel successfully contested Leicestershire and was returned as Member of Parliament. However, he had to leave the Commons within a month when he succeeded to the peerage on the death of his father on 31 October.
