Viscount Templetown
Viscount Templetown, in the County of Antrim, was a title in the Peerage of Ireland. It was created on 13 February 1806 for John Upton, 2nd Baron Templetown, Member of Parliament for Bury St Edmunds. He was the son of Clotworthy Upton, who served as Clerk Comptroller to Augusta, Dowager Princess of Wales. On 3 August 1776 he had been raised to the Peerage of Ireland as Baron Templetown, of Templetown in the County of Antrim. The first Viscount was succeeded by his eldest son, the second Viscount. He never married and on his death the titles passed to his younger brother, the third Viscount. He was a General in the Army and also sat as Conservative Member of Parliament for County Antrim from 1859 to 1863. Between 1866 and 1890 Lord Templetown sat in the House of Lords as an Irish Representative Peer. He was succeeded by his nephew, the fourth Viscount. Arthur Upton (Irish Politician)
General Arthur Percy Upton CB (13 June 1777 – 22 January 1855) was an Anglo-Irish soldier, politician and amateur cricketer. Background Upton was the third son of Clotworthy Upton, 1st Baron Templetown, by Elizabeth Boughton, daughter of Shuckburgh Boughton. John Upton, 1st Viscount Templetown, and the Honourable Fulke Howard were his brothers. He was educated at Westminster School and attended the Royal Military Academy in Berlin. Military career He entered the British army in 1793 as an ensign in the Coldstream Guards and thereafter rose through the ranks as a lieutenant and captain in 1795, aide-de-camp to Sir Ralph Abercromby in 1799, major in the 13th Foot in 1807, lieutenant-colonel in the 7th West Indian regiment and the Grenadier Guards in 1807, brevet colonel in 1814, major-general in 1821, lieutenant-general in 1837 and full general on 11 November 1851. George Upton, 3rd Viscount Templetown
General George Frederick Upton, 3rd Viscount Templetown (5 August 1802 – 4 January 1890), styled The Honourable George Upton until 1863, was an Irish soldier and politician. Military career Upton was the second son of John Upton, 1st Viscount Templetown of Botleys, Surrey. He joined the British Army in 1823 and was promoted lieutenant in 1825, captain in 1826, major in 1837, and lieutenant-colonel in 1841, all in the 62nd Foot, with the exception of the period 13 February 1827 to 8 June 1830 when serving as a Captain with 60th rifles. In 1842 he transferred to be captain and lieutenant-colonel in the Coldstream Guards. He was a major and brevet colonel in command of 1st Battalion in the Crimea in 1854–55, taking part in the Battles of the Alma and Inkerman and was made CB in 1855 and major general in 1858. Castle Upton
Castle Upton is situated in the village of Templepatrick, in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It is around north-west of Belfast. Originally the site of a 13th-century fortified priory of the Knights of St John, the present building was constructed around 1610 by the Norton family who settled here during the Plantation of Ulster. Soon after, it was bought by the Upton family, later the Viscounts Templetown, who remained in possession until the 20th century. The castle was remodelled in the 1780s to designs by Robert Adam, who also designed the stable block now known as 'Adam Yard'. Upton was purchased in 1963 by Sir Robin Kinahan and Coralie de Burgh, by which time it was in a poor state of repair. Following restoration the Adam Yard was converted to housing, and the castle later opened as a wedding venue. In 2016 the property was placed on the market by Kinahan's son Danny Kinahan MP. Castle Rising (UK Parliament Constituency)
Castle Rising was a parliamentary borough in Norfolk, which elected two Members of Parliament (MPs) to the House of Commons from 1558 until 1832, when it was abolished by the Great Reform Act. Its famous members of Parliament included the future Prime Minister Robert Walpole and the diarist Samuel Pepys. History The borough extended over four parishes - Castle Rising, Roydon, North Wootton and South Wootton, in rural Norfolk to the north-east of King's Lynn. Fulke Howard
'Hon. Fulk or Fulke Greville Howard (3 April 1773 – 4 March 1846), of Elford Hall, Staffordshire and Castle Rising, Norfolk, was an English politician. In early life he was known as Fulk Greville Upton. Life He was born at Geneva, the younger son of Clotworthy Upton, 1st Baron Templetown and educated at Westminster School (1786–1791), Christ Church, Oxford 1791 and the Military Academy in Berlin. He took his wife's surname of Howard on 6 August 1807, shortly after their marriage. He joined the Army and was an ensign in the 1st Foot Guards (1793), lieutenant and captain (1794), captain and lieutenant-colonel (1804), lieutenant-colonel of the 7th West Indian Regiment (1807). Reduced to half-pay, he commanded the Irish 9th garrison battalion (July 1807), was brevet colonel in 1813 and fully retired in 1825. The Irish House of Commons was the lower house of the Parliament of Ireland that existed from 1297 until 1800. The upper house was the House of Lords.
