The ValleyStar Credit Union 300 is a late model race held at Martinsville Speedway in the early fall each year since 1985. History In 1970, Martinsville Speedway added 250-lap twin features for the Late Model Sportsman and Modified classes annually. At the time, neither division used a touring format. The doubleheader took a drastic change from 1982 until 1985 when NASCAR began turning lower divisions of racing into a touring format to reduce costs by racing one single tour. The Late Model Sportsman race was changed to what is now the NASCAR Xfinity Series in 1982, and the Modified race was adopted into the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour in 1985. As the touring formats were adopted fully for the 1985 season, Martinsville Speedway cut the two races from 250 laps to 200 laps in 1985, and returned the local Late Models to the schedule in 1985, adding a 100-lap Late Model feature to the race weekend. Lee Pulliam (born April 5, 1988) is an American stock car racing driver and team owner. He is a four-time NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Division I national champion, and is the owner of late model racing team Lee Pulliam Performance. Racing career After graduating high school early and working as a diesel mechanic while in college to save money, Pulliam purchased his first race car in 2007. He raced his first season at South Boston Speedway and won Rookie of the Year in the Limited Sportsman class; he moved up to the late model class in 2011 and claimed 16 wins at Motor Mile Speedway. Mark Anthony Martin (born January 9, 1959) is a retired American stock car racing driver. He has the second most wins all time in what is now the Xfinity Series with 49. He scored 40 Cup Series wins. Curtis William Markham (born September 21, 1959) is a former NASCAR driver who raced in all three top series. Born in Richmond, Virginia, Markham made his Busch debut in 1983 driving the #94 Frank Edwards Pontiac with a best finish of 18th in three starts. In 1984 he made one start in the #85 J.R. Barry Beggarly is an American race car driver who competed on the short-tracks of Virginia and North Carolina, mainly during the 1980s and 1990s. Beggarly always used number 82 on his cars. Yontz (born July 13, 1986) is an American professional stock car racing crew chief and former driver who works as a crew chief for the No. 10 Kaulig Racing Chevrolet Camaro driven by Landon Cassill in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. Dennis Setzer (born February 27, 1960) is an American professional stock car racing driver. He has driven in all three of NASCAR's top series, scoring eighteen wins in the Camping World Truck Series. Beginnings Setzer made his NASCAR debut in the Busch Series in 1991 in the All Pro 300. He started 5th in his own #4 Ford Thunderbird, but crashed on lap nine and finished 40th. He ran another race the following year, at Hickory Motor Speedway in a car owned by Bill Davis. He wrecked in that race as well but still managed to finish 26th. In 1993, he ran four races for Daniel Welch, and had a top-ten run in the Advance Auto Parts 500. He was also a notable competitor in the Sportsman Division.
