Virginia State Route 74
State Route 74 (SR 74) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. Known for most of its length as Kentucky Avenue, the state highway runs from U.S. Route 23 Business (Norton, Virginia), U.S. Route 23 Business (US 23 Business) and U.S. Route 58 Alternate Business, US 58 Alternate Business in Norton, Virginia, Norton east to U.S. Route 58 Alternate, US 58 Alternate near Norton. SR 74 is the old alignment of US 58 Alternate in Norton. The highway was designated in 1958 from its western terminus to Kentucky Avenue and extended east in 1988. Route description SR 74 begins at US 23 Bus. and US 58 Alt. Bus. (Park Avenue) at the eastern end of downtown Norton. The state highway heads southeast on Coeburn Avenue, which has oblique, at-grade crossings with a pair of rail lines. Just east of the second crossing, SR 74 turns onto Kentucky Avenue. Norton, Virginia
Norton is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia, located in the far western tip of the state in Wise County, Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 3,687, making it the least populous city in Virginia. The Bureau of Economic Analysis combines the city of Norton with surrounding Wise County for statistical purposes. History The settlement was originally known as "Prince's Flats," but in a bid to convince the Louisville and Nashville Railroad to build a depot there, the town was renamed after the then-current head of the railroad, Eckstein Norton. Norton was located on the Wilderness Trail, which had been blazed by Daniel Boone, and later extensively mapped and settled by Christopher Gist.
