Virginia State Route 177
State Route 177 (SR 177) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. The state highway runs from Interstate 81 (I-81) near Radford north to U.S. Route 11 (US 11) in Radford. SR 177 directly connects I-81 with the eastern part of the independent city of Radford, including Radford University. Route description SR 177 begins at a diamond interchange with I-81 southeast of Radford. The road continues south as SR 600 (Tyler Road) past Carilion New River Valley Medical Center. SR 177 heads northwest as Tyler Road, a four-lane divided highway. The state highway enters the city of Radford at its intersection with Rock Road. SR 177 continues as Tyler Avenue through the eastern part of the city. The state highway becomes a two-lane divided highway at the southern edge of the campus of Radford University. Radford (formerly Lovely Mount, Central City, English Ferry and Ingle's Ferry) is an independent city in the U.S. state of Virginia. As of 2020, the population was 16,070 by the United States Census Bureau. For statistical purposes, the Bureau of Economic Analysis combines the city of Radford with neighboring Montgomery County. The following is a list of former primary state highways completely or mostly within the Salem District (VDOT District 2) of the U.S. state of Virginia. SR 102 State Route 102 connected Radford and Meadows of Dan along present secondary State Routes 787, 799, and 758. The route began at US 11 within Radford city limits, where SR 177 now ends, overlapped US 221 at Willis, and ended at US 58 near the eastern edge of Meadows of Dan. The state took over the first portions of SR 102 in 1928 as State Route 210, extending north from SR 205 (now US 221) at Willis to almost Radford. Since this was not quite enough mileage to reach SR 10 (now Auburn Avenue) at Rock Road (the former Southwestern Turnpike) east of the Radford city limits, a small addition was made in 1931 to connect SR 210 and the nearby SR 211 to SR 10. Carilion New River Valley Medical Center (CNRV) is a hospital in Montgomery County, Virginia, USA, about two miles from Radford. The hospital has 146 beds, and is part of Carilion Clinic. Diamond Interchange
A diamond interchange is a common type of road junction, used where a controlled-access highway crosses a minor road. Design The freeway itself is grade-separated from the minor road, one crossing the other over a bridge. Approaching the interchange from either direction, an off-ramp diverges only slightly from the freeway and runs directly across the minor road, becoming an on-ramp that returns to the freeway in similar fashion. The two places where the ramps meet the road are treated as conventional intersections. In the United States, where this form of interchange is very common, particularly in rural areas, traffic on the off-ramp typically faces a stop sign at the minor road, while traffic turning onto the freeway is unrestricted.
