Virginia State Route 110
Virginia State Route 110 (SR 110) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. Known as Richmond Highway (formerly Jefferson Davis Highway), the state highway runs from U.S. Route 1 (US 1) and Interstate 395 (I-395) in Crystal City north to I-66 in Rosslyn within Arlington County. SR 110 is a four- to six-lane freeway (with the exception of one at-grade intersection and a few driveways) that parallels the Potomac River, providing a connection between several of Arlington's urban villages. The state highway also provides access to the Pentagon, which is the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense, the grounds of Arlington National Cemetery, and SR 27, an east–west freeway between the Pentagon and the cemetery. Crystal City is an urban neighborhood in the southeastern corner of Arlington County, Virginia, south of downtown Washington, D.C. Due to its extensive integration of office buildings and residential high-rise buildings using underground corridors, travel between stores, offices, and residences is possible without going above ground; thus, a large part of Crystal City is an underground city. Pentagon Road Network
The Pentagon road network is a system of highways, mostly freeways, built by the United States federal government in the early 1940s to serve the Pentagon in northern Virginia. The roads, transferred to the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1964, are now largely state highways. The main part of the network is the Mixing Bowl at Interstate 395 (Shirley Highway) and Route 27 ( Washington Boulevard), named because it had major weaving issues with traffic "mixing" between the two roads before it was rebuilt in the early 1970s. The "Mixing Bowl" nickname is now more commonly used to refer to the Springfield Interchange, where I-395, I-495, and I-95 converge in nearby Springfield. Known as Columbia Pike, the state highway runs from SR 236 in Annandale east to SR 27 and Interstate 395 (I-395) at The Pentagon in Arlington. Boundary Channel
Boundary Channel is a channel off the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. The channel begins at the northwestern tip of Columbia Island extends southward between Columbia Island and the Virginia shoreline. It curves around the southern tip of Columbia Island before heading northeast to exit into the Potomac River. At the southwestern tip of Columbia Island, the Boundary Channel widens into the manmade Pentagon Lagoon. History of Boundary Channel Columbia Island is in part natural, and in part man-made. Pentagon City is an unincorporated neighborhood (also called an "urban village") located in the southeast portion of Arlington County, Virginia, near The Pentagon and Arlington National Cemetery. The 14th Street bridges refers to the three bridges near each other that cross the Potomac River, connecting Arlington, Virginia and Washington, D.C. Sometimes the two nearby rail bridges are included as part of the 14th Street bridge complex. A major gateway for automotive, bicycle and rail traffic, the bridge complex is named for 14th Street ( U.S. Route 1), which feeds automotive traffic into it on the D.C. end.
