The Virginia Brewery is a former brewery in Virginia, Minnesota, United States. It was built in 1905 and closed during Prohibition. With The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 for its local significance in the themes of architecture, commerce, and industry. It was nominated for being a distinctive example of the local breweries that contributed to economic and social life (through athletic sponsorships) of the Iron Range before Prohibition and competition from larger brands put them out of business. Virginia is a city in St. Louis County, Minnesota, United States, on the Mesabi Iron Range. With an economy heavily reliant on large-scale iron ore mining, Virginia is considered the Mesabi Range's commercial center. The population was 8,423 at the 2020 census. Virginia is just south of the Superior National Forest and about south of the Canada–United States border at International Falls, Minnesota, and northwest of Duluth, Minnesota. Virginia is a part of the Duluth metropolitan area and U.S. Highway 53 runs through town. History Virginia was laid out in 1892, and named after Virginia, the native state of a large share of the lumbermen in the area at the time. Richardsonian Romanesque is a style of Romanesque Revival architecture named after the American architect Henry Hobson Richardson (1838–1886). Iron Range
The term Iron Range refers collectively or individually to a number of elongated iron-ore mining districts around Lake Superior in the United States and Canada. Much of the ore-bearing region lies alongside the range of granite hills formed by the Giants Range batholith. These cherty iron ore deposits are Precambrian in the Vermilion Range and middle Precambrian in the Mesabi and Cuyuna ranges, all in Minnesota. The Gogebic Range in Wisconsin and the Marquette Iron Range and Menominee Range in Michigan have similar characteristics and are of similar age.
