Virgilio Maroso
Virgilio Maroso (; 26 June 1925 – 4 May 1949) was an Italian football player, who played as a defender for Torino FC and died in the Superga air disaster together with nearly the whole Grande Torino team. Biography Maroso was born in Marostica, in the province of Vicenza. He was the brother of Pietro Maroso (1934–2012), also a Serie A player and honorary president of A.S. Varese. Club career Maroso played as a defender. After a period on loan at Alessandria (1944), he made his club debut with Torino on 14 October 1945, in a 2–1 defeat to rivals Juventus in the Turin Derby. In total, he played 103 times for Torino in league matches, scoring once, and won four consecutive Serie A ('' scudetti'') titles between 1945 and 1949. International career At international level, he was capped seven times for the Italy national team between 1945 and 1949, scoring one goal. Marostica
Marostica (; vec, Maròstega ), is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Vicenza, Veneto, northern Italy. It is mostly famous for its live chess event and for the local cherry variety. History Between the 11th and 13th centuries, the locality was greatly influenced by several members of the important medieval family from the Veneto, known as the Ezzelini. They were finally defeated in 1260. Marostica was a Venetian city until Venice joined Italy. During the 19th century it was mainly a relatively poor town; a great number of inhabitants went to look for fortune in Brazil and many other places in the world. The wealth of the town grew greatly after the second world war. Superga Air Disaster
The Superga air disaster occurred on 4 May 1949, when a Fiat G.212 of Avio Linee Italiane (Italian Airlines), carrying the entire Torino football team (popularly known as the ''Grande Torino''), crashed into the retaining wall at the back of the Basilica of Superga, which stands on a hill on the outskirts of Turin. All thirty-one people on the flight died. Background The Avio Linee Italiane Fiat G.212CP was carrying the team home from Lisbon, where they had played a friendly match with S.L. Benfica in honour of the Portuguese captain, Francisco Ferreira. In the incident, the whole active Torino team (almost all of the Italy national football team) lost their lives. History The Hall of Fame Granata (''granata'' is the English for "maroon", the club's traditional colour) was created by the Museo del Grande Torino e della Leggenda Granata, which is run by the Associazione Memoria Storica Granata, an association of volunteer supporters who helped save the trophies and relics of the club during the demolition of the ancient Stadio Filadelfia, where they were kept. The Hall of Fame Granata was established in 2014 to celebrate those who have contributed in various ways to the history of the club. Torino were declared 1948–49 Serie A champions on 6 May 1949, after the Superga tragedy, an air disaster that killed the entire Torino squad. At the time of the declaration, Torino led the runner-up Internazionale by four points with four matches remaining. Their remaining four matches were played by their reserve team, and they finished the league five points ahead of the runner up. Teams Novara for Northern Italy, Padova for Central Italy and Palermo for Southern Italy had been promoted from Serie B. Events Following the restoration of ordinary Serie B championship, the FIGC decided to come back to two relegations only from Serie A.
