''Violet'' is a 1981 American short film directed by Shelley Levinson and starring Didi Conn. It won the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film in 1982. The film is based on the Doris Betts short story, " The Ugliest Pilgrim," first published in the collection ''Beasts of the Southern Wild and Other Stories'' in 1973 (Harper & Row Publishers). Doris Betts (June 4, 1932 – April 21, 2012) was a short story writer, novelist, essayist and Alumni Distinguished Professor Emerita at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Thomas McGowan (born July 26, 1959) is an American actor. He first became known for his stage career both on and off Broadway. In 1991, he was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actor in a Play for his Broadway debut performance in '' La Bête''. In 2011, McGowan was chosen to step into the role of the Wizard in ''Wicked'' on Broadway.
