''Violantha'' is a 1928 German-Swiss silent film directed by Carl Froelich and starring Henny Porten, Mathilde Sussin and William Dieterle.Parish & Canham p.118 The film is set in Switzerland and is based on a novel by Ernst Zahn. In 1942 it was remade by Paul May as a sound film under the slightly different title of '' Violanta''. The film's art direction was by Franz Schroedter. It was shot at the Halensee Studios in Berlin and on location in Switzerland. Carl Froelich
Carl August Hugo Froelich (5 September 1875 – 12 February 1953) was a German film pioneer and film director. He was born and died in Berlin. Biography Apparatus builder and cameraman From 1903 Froelich was a colleague of Oskar Messter, one of the advance guard of German cinema, for whom initially he worked on the construction of cinematographic equipment. As cameraman for Messter's weekly newsreels he filmed among many other things the aftermath of a train accident on the Berlin elevated railway on 28 September 1908, one of the worst transport disasters of the time. Film director and producer Between 1912 and 1951 he made 77 films. In 1913 Froelich made his directorial debut with ''Richard Wagner (film), Richard Wagner''. Gustave Preiss
Gustave Preiss (2 July 1881 – 7 January 1963) was a Swiss cinematographer known for his work in Weimar Germany. He learned the profession of filmmaker very young, by participating in the traveling cinema of his fatherLouis Preiss Senior. From 1906, he joined his brother, Louis Preiss in order to operate his own traveling cinema, "The Royal Bio". In 1908, following the death of his brother, he moved to Austria where he ran a cinema in Tepliz-Schonau. Between 1912 and 1932 he had a brilliant career as a filmmaker in Berlin, then he left Germany for Switzerland when the National Socialist party won the elections. From 1932 to 1952, he operated his own cinematographic laboratory in Zürich, where he produced most of the equipment himself. Blandine Ebinger (born Blandine Loeser) (4 November 1899, in Berlin – 25 December 1993, in Berlin) was a German actress and ''chansonniere''. Career Ebinger became acquainted with Friedrich Hollaender in 1919, and with him she became heavily invested as a performer, writer, and composer in the Berlin cabaret scene in the 1920s, beginning in the cabaret and the Café des Westens. She recorded many of her husband's, Friedrich Hollaender, cabaret songs, including the set of songs entitled '. Ebinger emigrated to the United States in 1937, returning to Berlin in 1947. She moved to Munich, where she met her second husband, the publisher Helwig Hassepflug, in 1961. Wilhelm Diegelmann
Wilhelm Diegelmann (28 September 1861 – 1 March 1934) was a German actor. Career Diegelmann's first stage appearance was in 1878 in the chorus for the Frankfurt Opera. In 1881 he debuted at the Frankfurt City Theater, playing King Lear, William Tell, and other title characters. Sometime around 1900, Diegelmann relocated to Berlin. Here, he appeared at a variety of theaters, including the Deutsches Theater, the Großes Schauspielhaus, and the Deutsches Künstlertheater. Diegelmann was introduced to film in 1913 by Max Reinhardt. he became a prolific actor of supporting roles, often as a father figure. Inge Landgut (23 November 1922 – 29 May 1986) was a German child actress. She is probably best-remembered for playing Pony Hütchen in ''Emil and the Detectives'' and as the child murder victim Elsie Beckmann in Fritz Lang's classic '' M'', both films were released in 1931.
