Viktor Janka
Viktor Janka von Bulcs, often shortened to ''Viktor Janka'' (24 December 1837 in Vienna - 9 August 1890 in Budapest) was an Austrian military officer and botanist. He worked as the officer of a Cuirassier regiment (armoured cavalry soldiers) for the Imperial Austrian Army until 1870. He was then named curator of the botanical department of the Budapest National Museum. He ceased working for the museum in 1889 and died one year later in the same city. Janka had collected many botanical specimens throughout the Austro-Hungarian Empire and his types are housed in the herbarium of the Babeș-Bolyai University in Romania. He discovered and described several plant species, including the Hungarian crocus (''Colchicum hungaricum''). Violaceae is a family of flowering plants established in 1802, consisting of about 1000 species in about 25 genera. It takes its name from the genus ''Viola'', the violets and pansies. Older classifications such as the Cronquist system placed the Violaceae in an order named after it, the Violales or the Parietales. However, molecular phylogeny studies place the family in the Malpighiales as reflected in the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (APG) classification, with 41 other families, where it is situated in the parietal clade of 11 families. Most of the species are found in three large genera, ''Viola'', ''Rinorea'' and ''Hybanthus''. The other genera are largely monotypic or oligotypic. The genera are grouped into four clades within the family. The species are largely tropical or subtropical but ''Viola'' has a number of species in temperate regions. Calcicole
A calcicole, calciphyte or calciphile is a plant that thrives in lime rich soil. The word is derived from the Latin 'to dwell on chalk'. Under acidic conditions, aluminium becomes more soluble and phosphate less. As a consequence, calcicoles grown on acidic soils often develop the symptoms of aluminium toxicity, i.e. necrosis, and phosphate deficiency, i.e. anthocyanosis (reddening of the leaves) and stunting. A plant that thrives in acid soils is known as a calcifuge. A plant thriving on sand (which may be acidic or calcic) is termed psammophilic or arenaceous (see also arenite). The flora of Romania comprises around 3,450 species of vascular plants, which represents around 30% of the vascular flora of Europe. The three major vegetation zones in Romania are the alpine, steppe, and forest zones. Sometimes bacteria and fungi are also referred to as flora, as in the terms ''gut flora'' or ''skin flora''. Etymology The word "flora" comes from the Latin name of Flora, the goddess of plants, flowers, and fertility in Roman mythology.
